James Gunn has confirmed what most everyone suspected: Thor: Ragnarok doesn't have a real deleted scene featuring an appearance by Yondu (Michael Rooker).
There are clearly some plot elements going on in the next two Avengers movies that will involve past events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe being revisited. What that means is that deceased characters may be able to return for the big Marvel team-up films. One character in particular who fans have speculated could appear in that of Yondu, despite his death in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Gunn has confirmed that Yondu is really dead and that reviving him would cheapen the moment. For that reason, many were immediately suspicious when a photo of Yondu in a Ragnarok "deleted scene" made its way online earlier this week. Gunn and Rooker have now confirmed that yes, it was just part of a joke.
Gunn, in a post to his Twitter account, has explained how Rooker in his Yondu costume somehow wound up hanging around with a bunch of Asgardians on the set of Thor: Ragnarok - and no, it wasn't part of an actual deleted scene from the film. Rooker himself later confirmed the director's explanation, via a response from his own verified Twitter account (see the tweets embedded below).
For those of you asking me how a Yondu deleted scene is on the Thor Ragnarok extras - I believe Rooker was at the lot shooting his bit for the Guardians Mission Breakout ride/Halloweeen version, and he stopped by the Thor set to goof around. Rooker, correct me if I’m wrong.— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) February 22, 2018
Although Gunn has left open the possibility of Yondu returning to the MCU in the future by way of a flashback or something like time travel, it certainly would have cheapened his death to have him pop up in another MCU film just a few months after he died. The actual Ragnarok footage with Rooker features Yondu asking for directions to the offices of Marvel executives Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito’s (prompting laughter from the extras around him), so it's not as though Rooker was really attempting to mislead anyone, either.
All talk of Yondu aside, there's plenty of proper bonus content available for those who purchase Thor: Ragnarok on DVD and Blu-ray. That includes a real deleted scene where Jeff Goldblum as The Grandmaster hosting a tentacle party of some sorts, along with a blooper reveal that showcases Ragnarok director Taika Waititi's comedic antics and interactions with the cast on the film's set in-between takes. And of course, there's the short featuring The Grandmaster and Darryl rooming together for Thor: Ragnarok fans to enjoy.
