Thor: Ragnarok Passes Wonder Woman at Global Box Office

Thor: Ragnarok just passed Wonder Woman at the worldwide box office. Taika Waititi's Thor 3, starring Chris Hemsworth as the eponymous character, marked the third and final installment in Marvel Studios' Thor trilogy, and one of the last movies on the docket to release before the Earth's mightiest heroes join up with the Guardians of the Galaxy for an ultimate showdown with the Mad Titan Thanos and his loyal Black Order in Anthony and Joe Russo's Avengers: Infinity War in summer 2018.

Considering that both Kenneth Branagh's Thor and Alan Taylor's Thor: The Dark World, though vital to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's overarching narrative, didn't perform exceptionally well at the box office, people wondered if the third movie would do well at all, especially since the last solo Thor movie released four years ago. But all those concerns were washed away when Thor: Ragnarok became one of the franchise's highest-rated movies ever and subsequently opened to $122 million domestically - topping The Dark World's opening gross by nearly $40 million - and rocketed to over $800 million globally in just under two months. Now, the film has scored yet another massive milestone prior to the year's end - and it's a big one.

Thor: Ragnarok's theatrical run is drawing to a close as Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi is nearing its release, but the superhero film is still managing to set new milestones. As of today, Thor 3 has passed Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot as the eponymous character, at the worldwide box office. Wonder Woman finished its run with $821.7 million globally (thus making the film the highest-grossing superhero origin story ever), and Ragnarok has now grossed $833.7 million worldwide.

Thor: Ragnarok is now the third highest-grossing superhero movie of the year, behind James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863.5 million) and Jon Watts' Spider-Man: Homecoming ($880 million), and it's currently the seventh highest-grossing movie of the year globally, behind movies such as Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin's Despicable Me 3 ($1.032 billion), F. Gary Gray's The Fate of the Furious ($1.235 billion), and Bill Condon's Beauty and the Beast ($1.263 billion). What's interesting is that, although Thor: Ragnarok passed Wonder Woman's global gross, it's still trailing the DCEU film domestically by a whopping $111 million - but it may close that gap to under $100 million before it finishes its domestic run.

At the moment, there's no plan for Thor 4 or Thor: Ragnarok 2, but Hemsworth is reprising his role as the Asgardian superhero in the Russos' Avengers: Infinity War in 2018 and untitled Avengers 4 in 2019. What comes after that remains to be seen, but there's no doubt that fans would love to see more of Waititi's Thor.
