Thor: Ragnarok could have had a different post-credits scene featuring the Grandmaster on the Asgardian ship traveling to Earth, director Taika Waititi revealed. Marvel's latest smash hit is finally out and the threequel's attempt to reinvent the God of Thunder's franchise was a success, with fans all over the world loving it. Waititi incorporated new elements and characters to breathe fresh air into the series, and arguably one of several standouts is Jeff Goldblum's Marvel Cinematic Universe debut role as The Grandmaster.

The quirky and eclectic leader of Sakaar and founder of the Contest of the Champions (the gladiator battle that the Hulk and Thor partake in), The Grandmaster is quite a character. He looks all bright and jolly, but can definitely be ruthless. Fans quickly grew fond of him - despite the fact that he is technically a secondary villain - thanks to Goldblum's hilarious performance. And while we don't know yet what the future has in store for the character, Waititi reveals that they initially planned for him to also be on the Asgardian ship that is traveling to Earth.

Sitting down with Collider, the director shares how he and his team came up with the two post-credits scenes in Ragnarok and in the conversation, he revealed an alternate version of the second tag featuring the Grandmaster:

“We were determined to not have too many of them. The thing [with Loki and Thor], that was the thing we did in reshoots. It was a last minute decision. And the other thing at the end, with The Grandmaster, was something we shot on Gold Coast that was something I planned for a long time. It was either going to be that or it was going to be Topaz and Grandmaster stowing away on the ship at the end.”

“That could be on the DVD in the deleted scenes, those two in the crowd of the Asgardians and he pushes through and goes, ‘I’ve never heard of this Earth place but… We got to keep a low profile.’ And they kind of put these blankets over their heads and disband into the crowd.

Thor: Ragnarok - Topaz, Grandmaster and Valkyrie

Sticking to Waititi's signature brand of comedy, the alternative also sounds hilarious. But what ultimately ended up in the movie with the Grandmaster lost in the middle of the planet's garbage dump and nervously telling the people of Sakaar that the revolution is a tie admittedly makes more sense in terms of Ragnarok's narrative. Having said that, there are probably few who would oppose the idea of seeing the eclectic character in future Marvel films with the possibility of him settling on Earth (should Thor's ship make it, given what went down during the mid-credit scene.)

It's unlikely we'll see the Grandmaster in the next several films on the MCU docket after Thor: Ragnarok, especially with the big arc that Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 will tread. But Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige himself has shared that he wants the thwarted Sakaar leader to eventually team-up with Benicio del Toro's The Collector, who apparently is his brother, in a future project. When and how remains to be seen, but that sounds like a pretty nifty idea.
