An extended clip from Thor and Hulk's Contest of Champions battle in Thor: Ragnarok is officially online. Thor: Ragnarok made a (Hulk) smashing debut domestically over the weekend, earning $122.7 million in its opening frame (adjusted upward from initial estimates of $121 million) to boost the film's first week global tally to more than $431 million. So, in apparent celebration of the blockbuster opening, Marvel Studios is offering up one of the film's key scenes.
Of course, fans knew from the release of the first Thor: Ragnarok trailer in April that the Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) gladiator-style battle was coming, but up until the film's release last week, only select pieces of it were highlighted for audiences online. Now that the film's in theaters, however, Marvel clearly wants to showcase the Thor vs. Hulk match in its full glory, and has made it available for everyone to see.
The 3-minute clip of the scene begins with a stadium-sized hologram of Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) introducing who is soon to be revealed as Hulk, followed by Thor's now-famous response, "We know each other. He's a friend from work!" Other familiar lines follow, including Thor's explanation to Hulk of his last few days (including the loss of his hammer) and Hulk's reintroduction to Loki (who in a great bit of reactionary comedy by Tom Hiddleston, appears petrified by the mean, green giant). Thor gets a bit of shock, too, learning that Hulk can speak ("No Banner, only Hulk!" Hulk angrily says as he charges toward the God of Thunder).
While the clip doesn't showcase the entire battle between Thor and Hulk, there's enough there to whet the appetite of moviegoers who haven't seen Thor: Ragnarok yet, or to get fans who have already seen the film to catch it again.
While a great deal of Thor and Hulk's Contest of Champions match has been featured in various trailers, TV spots and movie clips, it's fun to see the entire scene assembled in one place. It's obviously a great entry point for Thor and Hulk's reunion after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron - and after they lay smackdowns on one another, it clears the way for them to team up for the rest of the film.
While the Contest of Champions battle between Thor and Hulk is not exactly a direct take on the events of the Planet Hulk storyline from the comics, which inspired the Taika Waititi-directed movie, it's an entertaining scene nonetheless. The great thing is, it's only one of the several great moments in the film, which has more than earned its praise from critics as the best Thor movie yet.
