The details for the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok Blu-ray are released, including a synopsis of the return of the Marvel one-shot, this time, featuring the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) and Darryl (Daley Pearson). Initially introduced in 2011, the studio stopped producing the shorts in 2014, with the last one attached to Iron Man 3. But now, the Marvel one-shot makes its triumphant return under the tutelage of director Taika Waititi.
Debuting at San Diego Comic-Con 2016, Darryl was introduced as Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) roommate while he was staying in Australia on Waititi's mockumentary that aimed to hilariously explain his and Hulk's absence during the events of Captain America: Civil War. But since the God of Thunder left his relaxed living down under and actually went to work in the hopes of preventing Ragnarok, it seems Darryl may be struggling a bit to make ends meet, hence forcing him to get a brand new roommate. Unfortunately, if he thinks that Odinson was too much for him to handle, he should wait until he lives with the eclectic fallen leader of Sakaar.
Marvel Studios reveals a lot of significant information regarding the Blu-ray, including a very detailed description of what we can expect on the earlier teased one-shot featuring the ousted Sakaar leader and Thor's old Australian roommate Darryl. And from the sounds of it, it seems like the two will come together upon realizing that they need each other for very different reasons. Check out the synopsis of the short below:
"Fresh off being unseated as the ruler of Sakaar, the Grandmaster makes his way to Earth to start a new life. It’s been over a year since Thor left Australia and Darryl has been struggling to pay his rent. Now Darryl needs a new roommate to help make the monthly payments. Unfortunately for Darryl, the Grandmaster was the only one who answered Darryl’s “Roommate Needed” ad and with no viable options, the Grandmaster moves in."
Just because the Grandmaster now resides on Earth with Darryl doesn't necessarily mean that he will appear in the main movie franchise in the future, similar to the other one-shot scenes that did not really pan out in the bigger MCU films - like the teasing of the real Mandarin by Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley). Further, it's certainly interesting how he ends up in Australia considering that the last time we saw him, he's stuck on his planet after the successful revolution. Having said that, taking this route certainly keeps the door open for Goldblum to return to the franchise should Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and his team deem it necessary. We may never know what will happen to him or how he will cope living as basically an alien on a new planet, but knowing that he still exists will always be a good conversation starter among fans.
Aside from the Darryl and Grandmaster one-shot, there will be a number of additional special features on the Blu-ray. There are commentaries, featurettes, and even some deleted scenes, but Waititi made sure that his sense of humor spills over to all the bonus treats as a "tongue-in-cheek interview with Taika on casting Korg," will also be part of the pack. Meanwhile, for long-time MCU fans, an Evolution of Heroes bit will be a great selling point as it will "revisit each of our heroes’ current location and their place in the current MCU timeline, as it all leads up to the one culminating event: Avengers: Infinity War.”
Thor: Ragnarok will officially be available for digital download on February 20, with its DVD and Blu-ray release planned for March 6.
