Fans of Marvel's god of thunder have more than comics or movies to look forward to, now that he's set to star in Thor: Metal Gods, his very own original serialized fiction and audiobook series from Serial Box.

The project was recently announced as just the first of several new stories set to bring Marvel's characters into a new medium for fans. Led by screenwriter Aaron Stewart-Ahn (Mandy), a team of award-winning authors are set to tell another adventure starring Thor and Loki, the Asgardian brothers, as they set out across the stars to "untangle a dangerous mystery and stop the return of an ancient evil." An adventure fans will get to begin come December 12th.

The series can be either read or listened to via mobile device through Serial Box, and from the early details, the writing team--Stewart-Ahn, with Brian Keene (The Horror Show with Brian Keene), Jay Edidin (Jay & Miles X-Plain The X-Men), and Yoon Ha Lee (Ninefox Gambit)--have constructed a story with multiple hooks. Check out the official plot synopsis and the first newly released artwork for Thor: Metal Gods below:

Thor and Loki embark on a cosmic odyssey to stop the return of an ancient evil. A space adventure on an epic scale, Metal Gods propels Thor and Loki on a quest to recover a dangerous alien artifact. Together with a Korean tiger-goddess, a charismatic, gender-fluid space pirate, and Frost Giant mercenaries, the sons of Odin must each confront their pasts and face the truth behind the destruction of a planet that Thor once tried to help. Tinged with humor, celestial horror, complex relationships, space battles, barroom brawls, and blasts of sheer fun.

Thor: Metal Gods is only the first Marvel e-book series to launch on Serial Box (where readers can switch formats between either reading or listening in audiobook format). Additional original stories are set to launch in early 2020, with Black Panther, Black Widow, and Jessica Jones the first Marvel heroes getting the honors. As Serial Box Head of Content Hayley Wagreich explains (via official press release), the story of Metal Gods will be giving fans the kind of Thor adventure and cosmic thrills they expect, but also take the opportunity to explore more serious themes, as well:

The story of Thor is staggeringly epic—from Asgardian myth to intergalactic quests, to the (sometimes surprising, often hilarious) depth of his relationships—he’s got it all. But what makes this story truly exciting to us as we kick off our collaboration with Marvel is how grounded his story is in real issues of identity, humanity, and what it means to be a hero. We can’t wait to bring Metal Gods to Thor fans across the globe.

Only a few years ago, Marvel fans might have not taken notice of superhero stories told in audiobook format. But that's all changed following the success of projects like Wolverine: The Long Night, and Wolverine: The Lost Trail (which no doubt helped bring writer Benjamin Percy to Marvel's new Wolverine comic series). With the option to either listen to Thor: Metal Gods during your commute, or read it in text format, This new endeavor from Serial Box will be one to watch. Those interested in reading/hearing Thor: Metal Gods for themselves are encouraged to give the first episode a listen for free when it's released on December 12th, before buying the full season pass.
