Although Thor: Love and Thunder left the door open for the God of Thunder’s return in the Multiverse Saga and maybe beyond that, his future is now unclear and has made way for a couple of questions. After going through much-needed changes in Thor: Ragnarok and helping save the universe in Avengers: Endgame, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) became the only original Avenger to get four solo movies, but his future has now changed after Hemsworth’s decision to take an indefinite break from acting.

Thor was last seen adapting to a domestic lifestyle with Love (India Hemsworth), Gorr’s (Christian Bale) daughter who was brought back thanks to Eternity, and going on a mission with her, with Love wielding Mjolnir and Thor wielding Stormbreaker. Thor is still expected to return in the Multiverse Saga’s crossover events Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, but Hemsworth’s decision has put a big question mark on what Thor’s role in the upcoming Avengers movies could be, if he will have more solo adventures, or if he will return at all, among other questions about his future and potential goodbye in the MCU – and here are some of those questions.

6 When Will Thor Return In The MCU?

Thor love and thunder Avengers Guardians of the galaxy

Although the ending of Thor: Love and Thunder could be a nice conclusion to Thor’s adventures in the MCU as he could be retiring in order to raise Love and guide her through her own superhero journey, it would still feel like there’s something missing to finally bring Thor’s story to an end. As mentioned above, Thor is most likely to return in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars as these will bring together all the current MCU heroes to battle Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) and the chaos he and his variants unleash. Thor is one of only three remaining original Avengers and only one of two who are still active (Hawkeye has passed the torch to Kate Bishop), so it would be fair to bring him back for another big battle, and this would decide if he returns for a fifth solo adventure, if his role will be reduced like that of Bruce Banner/Hulk, or if he will retire.

5 Will Thor 5 Happen?

Hercules Thor MCU Fight Tease

Perhaps the biggest question around Thor’s MCU future is whether a fifth Thor movie will happen or not. The mid-credits scene in Thor: Love and Thunder set up Thor’s return in a fifth solo adventure with the introduction of Hercules (Brett Goldstein), as Zeus (Russell Crowe) is looking for revenge after Thor impaled him with his own thunderbolt. Right at the end of the credits, Love and Thunder included a “Thor will return” tagline, which director Taika Waititi later revealed (via Insider) was unaware was going to be added, adding that he would do another Thor movie but only if Hemsworth did too. However, the tagline doesn’t necessarily have to mean Thor returning in a fifth solo movie, as it could refer to his involvement in the upcoming crossover events. At the time of writing, there’s no official word on Thor 5, and if it doesn’t happen, there are going to be a couple of loose ends in Thor’s story.

4 Is Chris Hemsworth's Next MCU Movie His Last?

Thor love and thunder multiverse

Chris Hemsworth’s original contract with Marvel covered six movies, meaning it ended with Avengers: Endgame, but Waititi’s take on the God of Thunder in Thor: Ragnarok reignited interest in the character, allowing him to stay for longer. The reveal of Thor’s return at the end of Love and Thunder was also a surprise to Hemsworth, who later shared he has grown attached to the character and would be up to reprising it as much as he can. However, details about Hemsworth’s contract post-Endgame are unknown, so it’s unclear if his next MCU movie – whether Thor 5, The Kang Dynasty, or Secret Wars – will be his last.

3 Will We See Thor's Daughter, Love, Again?

Thor and Love spring to action at the end of Thor Love and Thunder

Thor looked to be taking his role as guardian/father very seriously at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, and with Love shown easily wielding Mjolnir, she’s expected to keep appearing in the MCU at least for as long as Thor is around. Love’s introduction further fueled speculation about the formation of a Young Avengers team in the near future, which would be fitting as Thor is now training Love, and in the comics, his actual daughter (Torunn Thorsdóttir) led a version of the Avengers on Earth. Love surely has a place in the MCU’s not-so-distant future, but just like Thor’s, her future is currently unknown.

2 Will Thor Meet Loki’s Variant?

Loki and Thor avengers infinity war Loki

Thor saw his half-brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), be killed right in front of his eyes in the first minutes of Avengers: Infinity War, and Love and Thunder proved Thor hasn’t exactly gotten over his death as he has a big tattoo on his back paying tribute to his fallen brother. Thor doesn’t know that the Time Heist in Endgame made way for a variant of Loki that is alive and well and has quickly redeemed himself in ways the original one couldn’t, and is now part of the fight against a multiversal war. Given the complicated history between Thor and Loki, it would be interesting to have the God of Thunder meet his brother’s variant, thus helping him give closure to his grief and make amends with his brother, even if it’s a variant.

1 Will Thor Die In The MCU?

Sad thor avengers endgame Thor love and thunder

With Thor being one of the last original Avengers standing, and with the introduction of Love as his potential replacement, there are many rumors about Thor’s upcoming death in the MCU. As heartbreaking as it would be, Kang killing Thor in The Kang Dynasty would make a huge statement about Kang’s power, and his death could even be the trigger for the formation of the Young Avengers, with Love continuing her guardian’s legacy. Other theories suggest Marvel will repeat its Avengers: Endgame formula and have an original Avenger sacrifice himself at the end of Avengers: Secret Wars to save the multiverse, and that could be Thor. Thor is already the Avenger with the most tragic story, and while killing him would fit with the Multiverse Saga and the level of threat Kang is, it risks being very disappointing.
