New story details for Thor: Love and Thunder reveal villain Gorr the God Butcher's mission. In addition to appearing in multiple MCU team-up movies, Chris Hemsworth's Thor has also appeared in three solo standalone movies—Thor, Thor: The Dark World, and Thor: Ragnarok, which was released in 2017. After nearly five years, Thor is set to get another solo adventure with Thor: Love and Thunder, which sees Taika Waititi return to the director's chair after helming Thor: Ragnarok.

The first official teaser trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder dropped just today without notice. The trailer, which is set to "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' Roses, teases plenty of action and humor in the upcoming MCU installment, including the return of Chris Pratt and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy. In addition to Hemsworth and Pratt, Thor: Love and Thunder features the return of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, as well as appearances from Karen Gillan, Matt Damon, Russell Crowe, and Tessa Thompson. Christian Bale also stars in the upcoming film, playing Gorr the God Butcher.

In Marvel's official synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder, the mission of Bale's Gorr the God Butcher is finally revealed. According to the synopsis, Gorr is a "galactic killer" who is hell-bent on achieving "the extinction of the gods." Gorr is said to interrupt Thor's plans for retirement, forcing him to team up with King Valkyrie, Korg, and Jane, who is now the Mighty Thor, in order to defeat him. Read the full synopsis below:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Thor and Korg look upon a dead god in Thor Love And Thunder.

Marvel's synopsis doesn't clarify Gorr the God Butcher's motivations in terms of why he wants to wipe out all gods, but it's possible that future trailers for the film will reveal more about the character. Although Bale's casting has been known for many months, fans also have yet to actually see the actor in action as Gorr and he was noticeably absent from the recent trailer. It seems likely that Gorr the God Butcher's big reveal will be saved for a longer, full-length trailer that will drop closer to the film's release, with Gorr's Necrosword from the comics also potentially making an appearance.

While the synopsis still leaves a lot of questions, Thor: Love and Thunder seems to be delving into Thor's inner self more than any previous MCU film. It's not clear just how formidable an opponent Gorr will be, but with a name like "Gorr the God Butcher" and a talented actor like Bale playing the role, it's likely that Thor will have his work cut out for him this time around. Fans still have a while to wait before they get to see Gorr the God Butcher in action, with Thor: Love and Thunder set to release on July 8th.
