Thor's new armor throws up a major Asgard plot hole issue ahead of Thor: Love and Thunder's summer release date. Excitement is steadily building for Taika Waititi's latest Thor installment, with an official new look at Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) new sets of armor revealed online. These latest promotional images immediately create a plot hole for Thor: Love and Thunder, however, with Asgard's destruction in the penultimate scene of Thor: Ragnarok already asking testing questions of Waititi's latest project.

While exact plot details for Thor: Love and Thunder remain under wraps, the upcoming MCU installment is confirmed to take place following the events of Avengers: Endgame. Teasers for Thor: Love and Thunder have already confirmed Jane Foster will make her long-awaited transition into Mighty Thor, with the aforementioned armor leaks showing her worthy of wielding Mjolnir itself. Although it is currently unclear how Jane will become a new God of Thunder, it will likely involve defeating Christian Bale's menacing new villain: Gorr, The God Butcher.

Images of Thor's new armor have revealed a major Asgard plot hole for Thor: Love and Thunder to contend with. Primarily sculpted from Asgardian steel, Thor's armor requires forging on his homeworld, a feat made impossible by Asgard's destruction at the end of Thor: Ragnarok. This inevitably throws up the question as to how Thor has obtained his fresh set of armor, with New Asgard seemingly unequipped to create Asgardian steel judging by its currently limited appearances within the MCU.

The destruction of Asgard inevitably closes the door to many of the Norse kingdom's riches and technologies seen throughout the first three phases of the MCU. One such famed technology is the ability to forge Asgardian steel, the primary component used in Thor's iconic "Scale Mail" worn in every MCU installment in which the God of Thunder appears to date. However, by the end of Avengers: Endgame, Thor's classic armor set is severely damaged, with the sleeves torn off, breastplate broken, and gauntlets destroyed in his battles with Thanos.

Yet in the initial image previews of Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor is seen wearing a fresh suit of Asgardian armor - begging the question as to how he could have obtained such an item. While New Asgard is a tempting conclusion to draw from the off, the Norwegian town of Tønsberg is a decidedly Earthly location, with no shown means of forging Asgardian steel to date in the MCU. This fact backs Thor: Love and Thunder into an immediate narrative corner, with Taika Waititi's story looking increasingly likely to require a force-majeure-style event to explain exactly how Thor acquired his latest suit of blue-tinted Asgardian plate.

Jane Foster's exact journey to becoming Mighty Thor is yet to be revealed, meaning her character could well obtain or even create suits of armor from an as of yet unknown source. Spider-Man: No Way Home's recent dalliances with the Multiverse also open up the possibility of a do-over for Asgard, with Thor obtaining his new armor from an alternate timeline in which his mythical homeworld still exists. While speculation regarding Thor's new armor will undoubtedly continue, until Thor: Love and Thunder's story definitively address this issue Thor's new armor will remain a major Asgard-themed plothole for the upcoming MCU film to contend with.
