After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) returned for a new adventure in his fourth “solo” movie Thor: Love & Thunder, and while the God of Thunder went through some changes since Endgame, he repeated his Avengers: Infinity War Thanos mistake in Love & Thunder. Thor made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011, and after a couple of failures and not being exactly the most interesting member of the Avengers, he went through some major and necessary changes in his third solo movie, Thor: Ragnarok, which allowed him to stay in this connected universe for longer.

Thor is now the first MCU hero to get four solo movies, and Love & Thunder has been his biggest adventure so far. Set after the events of Endgame, Thor: Love & Thunder saw Thor joining forces with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and Jane Foster/Mighty Thor (Natalie Portman) to stop Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) from killing all the Gods, as he was in possession (and under the influence) of the Necrosword. The team traveled to Omnipotence City to warn the other gods and also ask for their help in creating an army, but it didn’t go as planned as the leader of the gods, Zeus (Russell Crowe), refused to help them, leading to a confrontation in which Thor ended up repeating his Infinity War Thanos mistake, as he once more didn’t go for the head when fighting Zeus.

How Zeus Is Still Alive & What It Means For Thor's Future

Russell Crowe as Zeus in Thor Love and Thunder

In the MCU, Zeus is the king of the Olympians and the leader of the gods, which is why Thor wanted to talk to him about Gorr and how they could defeat him if they helped each other. Unfortunately for Thor, Zeus had gone from a noble and courageous warrior to an arrogant and selfish god who only cared about his own pleasures, and he showed no concern about Gorr’s murders and threats. This led to a confrontation between Thor and Zeus, in which Zeus threw his Thunderbolt at Thor, but the latter caught it, charged it with lightning, and threw it back, impaling Zeus through the chest. However, in typical MCU fashion, this wasn’t the end for Zeus, and the mid-credits scene of Love & Thunder revealed he survived and is now ready for revenge.

As Zeus is a god, he not only has superhuman abilities, but he can also heal from wounds that would be fatal for other characters, thus why he survived being impaled by his own weapon, though he was truly afraid of the Necrosword as that’s the one weapon that can truly kill gods. Another important characteristic of Zeus is his immortality, hence why he couldn’t have been killed by Thunderbolt or any other weapon aside from the Necrosword. However, this doesn’t mean that Zeus isn’t a vengeful god, and as seen in the mid-credits scene of Love & Thunder, he has already prepared his revenge and sent his son, Hercules (Brett Goldstein), to kill the God of Thunder.

Thor Still Needs To Learn From His Infinity War Mistakes

Avengers 3 Infinity War Thor Using Stormbreaker Against Thanos

One of, if not the most infamous moment in Thor’s MCU history so far is how he failed to “go for the head” when he had the chance to kill Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, instead stabbing him on the chest with Stormbreaker. This allowed Thanos to snap his fingers and wipe away half of life in the universe, sending Thor into a deep depression for many years. Thor: Love & Thunder saw Thor healing and finding himself, but his battle against Zeus shows that he still hasn’t fully learned from his Infinity War mistakes, as he, once again, went for the chest instead of the head. Of course, even if he had decapitated Zeus, it’s likely that he would have still healed, but it would have been one big step for Thor as he would have shown that he has learned from his past mistakes and isn’t going to repeat them. Having made the same mistake twice, Thor should’ve learned a big lesson by now about how to attack his enemies and thus avoid future problems.
