Thor: Love and Thunder is the fourth solo movie of Thor’s, but in two minutes it managed to do something Thor and Thor: Dark World failed at. Thor: Love and Thunder fills in a few gaps in Thor’s timeline since Avengers: Endgame such as his many adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Thor’s fourth solo MCU story also introduces Thor’s first love, Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor. Since Thor: Dark World, Jane has only been mentioned by name, minus a brief appearance in Avengers: Endgame, but her progression into Mighty Thor centralized her once more in Thor’s story.

Thor: Love and Thunder used a quick two-minute montage to show the unseen story of Thor and Jane’s relationship which manages to do a better job of making audiences believe and invest in their relationship than the first two Thor movies put together. Audiences were finally shown the depth of Thor and Jane’s relationship, how long it actually was, and why it was such a painful break-up for them. Up until Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor spoke passionately about his relationship with Jane but the lack of evidence throughout the MCU movies made their romance somewhat unbelievable.

Thor and Jane's Relationship Was Not Believable Before Love & Thunder

Jane and Thor talking in the rain in Thor: The Dark World

Thor established Thor and Jane’s romance and set up a tumultuous relationship by leaving Thor unable to return to Earth. However, Thor was not able to set up much else regarding their relationship aside from the fact they loved each other. Thor: The Dark World offered even less of their romance, especially with Jane being angry that Thor did not reach out to her when he was on Earth for the events of The Avengers movie. Although they rekindle their romance in Thor: The Dark World, audiences never see their relationship or lives together to make it believable. Thor obviously loves Jane and is never shy about that, in Avengers: Age of Ultron Thor tries to outdo Tony Stark as they brag about their girlfriends but, aside from that, Thor and Jane are broken up by the time Thor: Ragnarok could have had a chance to explore their relationship on a deeper level.

Love & Thunder Properly Fixed Thor & Jane Foster's Romance

Thor and Jane in Love and Thunder

Thor and Jane are reunited in Thor: Love and Thunder after Thor is shown to still be heartbroken over their separation. Thor is also shown to be angry over being broken up with by a note left by Jane, and not in person, which is stopping him from getting closure. Thor: Love and Thunder has a two-minute montage of their entire relationship, showing their day-to-day lives together. The montage is not about big romantic moments but the smaller ones which do a better job of making audiences believe and invest in their romance.

Also, Thor: Love and Thunder goes beyond the montage and makes the romance deeper still, which could have been done with a Thor: The Dark World deleted scene. The montage shows how the relationship started to fail and, after a while of audiences thinking Jane heartlessly left Thor, both Thor, and Jane get to explain their sides of the story. This adds way more depth to their relationship and adds to the pain they’re feeling by not being together throughout Thor: Love and Thunder. The exploration of Thor and Jane’s relationship throughout Thor: Love and Thunder creates a much more realistic and emotional reunion between the pair, and makes the ending, although heart-breaking for him, finally offer Thor some closure.
