Footage from Thor: Love and Thunder reveals that Mjolnir will be restored, but exactly how it will happens remains a mystery. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe had seemingly put Mjolnir to rest, it appears that that couldn’t have been further from the truth. Blue cracks in the hammer confirm that the weapon of Jane Foster's Mighty Thor is the exact same hammer once wielded by Hemsworth's character.

Thor: Ragnarok saw Mjolnir be destroyed by Hela to set up an arc for Thor to unlock his full potential as the God of Thunder. Avengers: Infinity War kept that going by giving Thor a brand new weapon, the Stormbreaker. Thor's new weapon, Stormbreaker was implied to be even more powerful than Mjolnir, so that, coupled with Thor’s character arc, made it appear that Mjolnir was gone for good.

However, Thor: Love and Thunder is bringing it back and giving it to Jane Foster, who could wind up with it in one of a few ways. One possibility is the simplest one available, which would hinge on the rules put on the hammer by Odin's enchantment, which are “Whoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.” Jane was able to take Thor’s place in the comics because she became worthy enough to wield Mjolnir, so if the enchantment is still in effect in spite of its destruction, then Jane’s worthiness might cause Mjolnir to reconstruct itself in order to serve as a weapon for a new master. Alternatively, Marvel can make Mjolnir's return to the MCU a bit more involved by having someone purposively rebuilt it. As for how who could pull that off, the MCU already has a character capable of accomplishing this feat. Here's how Thor: Love and Thunder may go about fixing Thor's broken hammer.

Eitri Is A Likely Candidate For Repairing Mjolnir

Eitri in The Avengers Infinity War

Perhaps the most likely candidate for rebuilding Mjolinir is Avengers: Infinity War's Eitri (Peter Dinklage), who should be remembered as the dwarf who forged Stormbreaker so that Thor could kill Thanos. When asked about the possibility of reprising his role in the MCU, Dinklage mentioned "There’s another Thor movie there, isn’t there, that's coming out?" The comment confirmed nothing, but it certainly came across as a tease that Eitri will make an appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder. And it's worth noting that it shouldn't be a surprise if he did appear. After all, Eitri having a cameo or even a few scenes in the movie makes sense, given the circumstances. For the movies, Nidavellir was established as the birthplace of Mjolnir, so if Eitri was capable of creating both it and Stormbreaker, then it would stand to reason that he would be able to put the pieces of Mjolnir back together. His inclusion would be a fitting answer to how Mjolnir is repaired in the MCU. Since making magical weapons is his expertise, there's no other existing MCU character that suits this role better. As the expert on such things, he could be sought out by Thor in the movie. Thor's efforts to have it fixed for himself could somehow result in Jane getting Mjolnir instead. That does seem plausible, especially since the second trailer revealed that Thor will try to restore Mjolnir, only to see Jane end up with it.

Mjolnir being destroyed and rebuilt isn't a new idea, given its precedence for it in its decades of comic book history. It was broken into pieces by the Destroyer in its first appearance and fixed a couple of issues later, and another time, it was destroyed in a fight between Thor and his grandfather Bor, but Doctor Strange fixed it by channeling Thor’s Odin Force, the unrivaled cosmic energy of the king of Asgard. More recently, Thor's hammer Mjolnir was destroyed when Jane used it to fly the Mangog into the sun during The Death of the Mighty Thor, but in War of the Realms, Thor harnessed the power of a cosmic thunderstorm known as the God Tempest to restore Mjolnir. Some of these ideas could be combined when Marvel writes Mjolnir back into the story in Thor's next adventure. Additionally, Mjolinir's return could call for help from someone who knows how to fix the hammer. but the MCU will most likely set up Mjolnir's comeback through Eitri.

A Thor/Stormbreaker And Jane/Mjolnir Team Up Is Lethal

Jane Foster wielding Mjolnir and Thor keeping Stormbreaker would be a dangerous combination for any villain they fight in the MCU, and that's also exactly what appears to be the plan for Thor: Love and Thunder, which will see the two characters on the same side. Since Korg, Valkyrie, and possibly the Guardians of the Galaxy will be on hand as well, this may feel like an overpowered group of heroes for Thor 4. That being said, the arrival of a villain as powerful as Gorr the God Butcher may make a Thor-Jane Foster team-up a necessary development. Similar to how Avengers: Endgame featured a Mjolnir-wielding Captain America fighting side-by-side with Thor against Thanos, Thor: Love and Thunder is in a good position to offer a thrilling action sequence where the two Gods of Thunder combine their weapons to take on Christian Bale's MCU villain. Even though each is counted as one of the strongest weapons in the entire MCU, having both around could be vital to combating All-Black the Necrosword, which is the all-powerful blade that made Gorr's killing spree against the gods possible in the first place. Stormbreaker or Mjolnir by itself may not be enough to offset the power of All-Black.

As of now, so there’s no way of knowing how Jane Foster’s story will play out in the movie or what role she'll play in Gorr's defeat. However, in regards to Mjolnir, both the movies and the comics clearly provide a lot of ways for it to be restored, so how it would be possible for her to obtain it doesn’t need to be too much of a concern. It’s possible that Thor: Love and Thunder will do something completely out of leftfield in regards to Mjolnir, but assuming that that doesn’t happen, the groundwork has already been laid.
