New Thor: Love and Thunder set images reveal Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) seemingly out on a date in what looks to be a flashback to 2013's Thor: The Dark World. Principal photography for the upcoming Taika Waititi Marvel Studios film wrapped up in Australia earlier in 2021. But pick-ups are currently taking place in the United States offering more information as to what to expect from the blockbuster.

Plot details for Thor: Love and Thunder are still scant at the moment, but it's confirmed to bring back Jane Foster to the MCU after years of absence. This time, however, she will be assuming her own superhero role, becoming Mighty Thor. As for how exactly this is going to pan out is currently unknown, but this only means that a reunion with the God of Thunder is inevitable. It can be remembered that in Thor: Ragnarok, the Asgardian Prince revealed that he and Jane broke up, although no additional context was given regarding why. As their paths cross again, they could ultimately rekindle their romance, but first, the film needs to explain first what went wrong in their initial relationship.

Based on Jane and Thor's respective hairstyles, this scene is more likely a flashback to the events around the same time as Thor: The Dark World. As previously mentioned, Thor: Ragnarok only included a throwaway line explaining Jane's absence in the threequel. While that made sense considering that the movie was a reinvention of the God of Thunder and his Marvel Studios sub-franchise, it also didn't sit well with many fans. This is especially true since it emphasized how wasted Portman was in the MCU. Fortunately, they found a way to bring her back, giving them the opportunity to fill narrative gaps regarding what really caused their break-up in the first place.

Explaining Thor and Jane's past romance is intrinsic to Thor: Love and Thunder's overall narrative. After assuming the role of Mighty Thor, it's safe to say that she will continue to be a major player in the MCU, and her connection to the God of Thunder is a significant part of her personal story. That being said, it's also curious if Marvel Studios is setting up them getting back together. Granted, their first pairing wasn't exactly as well-received as Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) or Captain America (Chris Evans) and Peggy Carter's (Hayley Atwell), but the franchise can make up for it this time.
