Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi reveals what he knows about Guardians of the Galaxy 3 after making Thor 4. Alongside Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, and Christian Bale, Love and Thunder features the return of the Star-Lord and his crew to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who last appeared in the series in Avengers: Endgame. In Love and Thunder, Peter Quill / Star Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) will appear alongside the God of Thunder for at least one action sequence that's been heavily featured in the marketing campaign.

The Guardians squad have become immensely popular since their debut in 2014 in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Not only did they join the mainstream MCU with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, but their first two films became beloved for their soundtrack, sense of humor, and grand new character with unique personalities and catch phrases. Star-Lord and his team are getting another solo installment with Guardians of the Galaxy 3. This third installment to the Guardians of the Galaxy series will also be directed by Gunn, and is set for release in the spring of 2023. The plot has yet to be announced for Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

After writing an entire script for the characters in Love and Thunder, Waititi reveals what he knows about Guardians of the Galaxy 3: absolutely nothing. In fact, Waititi revealed to Digital Spy that he never even read the script for Gunn’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film nor talked to Gunn about the film. Check out the full quote from Waititi below:

“No, I still have no idea what that film's about. I never read a script, I never talked to James [Gunn] about that film. All I did was I wrote what I thought the characters sounded like, sent those pages to James and he was like: 'Star-Lord wouldn't say that'. The same thing with Thor on Infinity War and Endgame, I came in just to help with the way Thor speaks and the scriptwriting on that, so 'This is how Thor would come into the scene, this is how Thor would comment on that.’”

The fact that Waititi did not talk to Gunn about Guardians of the Galaxy 3’s content may come as a shock to MCU followers. Given their release dates, it would seem as though the Guardians’ roles in Thor: Love and Thunder would be the logical setup for their solo film. As far as anyone knows, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 should come after Love and Thunder in the chronological timeline. MCU films are always consequential, meaning that when, for example, Iron Man dies in Endgame he could not then be alive in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Without reading the script, it would be harder for Waititi to avoid creating potential plot holes or weird jumps from Love and Thunder to Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

Hopefully, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be largely free of plot holes. Even if Waititi did not read the Guardians of the Galaxy 3 script, hopefully Gunn will have talked to the director enough about Love and Thunder to avoid major discontinuity between the two films. Maintaining MCU continuity has proved challenging for Gunn, who has previously noted that MCU fans take their continuity extremely seriously. With Thor: Love and Thunder releasing later this week, viewers will see what happens to the Star Lord and his team, and what that means for Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
