The main villain of Thor: Love And Thunder is Gorr, one of Marvel’s cruelest adversaries, and his infamously dangerous blade may be more than a match for Thor’s axe, Stormbreaker. In the comics, Gorr is a dangerous and powerful foe on a personal mission to kill all gods in the universe, including the God of Thunder. The sword he wields, named All-Black, has a terrifying history, and its handiwork has already been seen in the MCU.

Thor was among the first MCU movies, and its titular hero is one of the longest-running heroes to still be part of the ongoing saga. It’s hard to mention Thor without at least thinking of his magic hammer, Mjolnir, forged from the heart of a dying star. When it was introduced, it was one of the most overpowered single objects in the MCU, completely immovable by anyone but Thor himself and able to take down entire armies like bowling pins. But a lot has changed since then. The destruction of Mjolnir during Thor: Ragnarok showed that there are far more powerful forces out there in the galaxy. Since Avengers: Infinity War, Thor has wielded the axe, Stormbreaker, essentially an upgraded version of Mjolnir. However, it feels like it’s only a matter of time until Stormbreaker meets its match.

The dark sword wielded by Gorr, All-Black, may well be stronger than Stormbreaker. Gorr is known from the comics as The God Butcher, and the sword was not originally his own. Instead, he acquired the All-Black from a primal god of darkness named Knull. Knull created the sword and once used it to wage war against the Celestials in an attempt to return the entire universe to darkness. The severed head of a Celestial who Knull killed appeared in Guardians Of The Galaxy and Infinity Warthe outpost known as Knowhere. All-Black has a fearsome reputation in the Marvel Comics, being described as “made from living darkness.” Its wielder can summon things from pure darkness, like a shroud, weapons, and wings capable of flight at absurd speeds. Unsettlingly, the All-Black has a will of its own, and chose Gorr as its wielder, for his hatred and bloodthirst.

It’s hard to say if the MCU version of All-Black will match the version from the comics. Mjolnir was fantastically powerful in the Thor comics, being described as one of the most formidable weapons known even to the gods, while it was rather less powerful in the movies. Comic Mjolnir was able to easily level mountains and could contain enough power to destroy an entire galaxy. While MCU Mjolnir wasn’t quite so powerful, Stormbreaker’s abilities have been left open-ended. More powerful than the MCU's Mjolnir, Stormbreaker may still be able to show some of the more unusual powers that Mjolnir had in the comics, like generating forcefields or creating blasts of mystical energy. After it was able to briefly overwhelm Thanos’ fully powered infinity gauntlet, it’s obviously a weapon to be feared.

The interesting thing about All-Black is its connection with Knull, a character who’s yet to appear in the MCU. In comic lore, Knull was the creator of Venom and the race of symbiotes he comes from. All-Black is canonically the first symbiote Knull created, which it's why it has the ability to corrupt its wielder – comic book storylines have shown this happening to characters including Loki, Galactus, and Ego, with terrifying results. The severed head which would later become Knowhere was where Venom and the symbiotes were born. Knull could be a bigger threat than Thanos, and Love And Thunder is a perfect opportunity to do so.

It’s difficult to truly say which of the two epic weapons will be the more powerful, particularly as they have such different abilities, but it’s likely that Stormbreaker will be at least as powerful as All-Black. All-Black may even be the stronger weapon of the two, giving Thor a worthy challenge. Either way, Thor: Love And Thunder is set to be a spectacular battle of light against dark.
