Thor: Love and Thunder has now officially surpassed Thor: Ragnarok at the domestic box office. After Thor: The Dark World failed to strike a chord with audiences and critics, the legendary God of Thunder was revitalized in 2017 with Thor: Ragnarok. The film, which saw director Taika Waititi at the helm, brought a unique sense of humor to the character and the franchise was a hit with critics and MCU fans alike. Chris Hemsworth and Waititi recently re-teamed for this summer's Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth standalone Thor film.

Thor: Love and Thunder has drawn somewhat mixed reviews from fans, with many criticizing the film's lackluster effects and overly-comedic tone. Others, however, have praised the film for its thoughtful treatment of Natalie Portman's Jane Foster, a.k.a. The Mighty Thor, and its top-notch villain in the form of Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher. Despite somewhat mixed initial reviews, Thor: Love and Thunder had a strong opening weekend at the box office, earning over $143 million. The film's opening weekend box office haul was the year's third biggest, and was noticeably higher than Thor: Ragnarok's $123 million opening in 2017.

Now, per a new report from DeadlineThor: Love and Thunder has continued its box office victory over Thor: Ragnarok, recently surpassing the film's domestic total. Thor: Love and Thunder has now earned $316 million domestically in its fifth week, putting it just ahead of Thor: Ragnarok's $315 million domestic total. Hemsworth's fourth Thor outing still has a ways to go before it passes Thor: Ragnarok's global total, however, with the films sitting at $700 million and $853.9 million, respectively.

It's unclear, at this point, whether Thor: Love and Thunder will pass Thor: Ragnarok at the worldwide box office, but the latter film did benefit greatly from positive word-of-mouth. Waititi's second Thor film has proven much more divisive and experienced a significant drop in its second weekend, which is seemingly compounded by a general sense of disappointment regarding MCU's Phase 4. Notably, Thor: Love and Thunder is also expected to land on Disney+ towards the end of August, giving it a shorter overall theatrical window than Thor: Ragnarok.

Despite its mixed reception, however, Thor: Love and Thunder is clearly resonating with many audiences in North America. The film is also benefitting from a general lack of competition at the moment, with Top Gun: Maverick now several months into release and Nope generally geared towards a different demographic. It remains to be seen what the next few weeks will look like for Thor: Love and Thunder at the box office but the film still has some catching up to do if it hopes to beat Thor: Ragnarok's global total.
