Thor’s new costume in Thor: Love & Thunder offers an exact glimpse into the hero’s current state and is perfect after the events of Avengers: Endgame. As audiences eagerly await the first trailer of the tetralogy’s latest installment, Marvel has shared Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) new costume. His Love & Thunder look bears a prominent difference from his trademark appearance, but more importantly, it reflects the growth and change he has faced, especially with the ending of Avengers: Endgame.

Thor experienced quite a transformative journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. First introduced in his 2011 solo film, the God of Thunder was initially met with a lukewarm reception. When the sequel Thor: The Dark World was released just two years later, critic and audience reviews were certainly mixed, pointing out the wasted potential of the titular character by situating him against a forgettable villain, with many pointing out he continued to be upstaged by Tom Hiddleston's Loki. Fortunately, 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok managed to redeem the series, showcasing the Nordic god in a playful, comedic light, as opposed to the broody nature he exhibited in previous films. However, by the end of the Infinity Saga, Thor reverted to this state as he successively lost everything he knew, including Mjölnir (temporarily), his entire family, and Asgard.

Through the tie-in merchandise, Marvel has officially confirmed new costume designs for Thor: Love & Thunder months before the film hits theaters. Instead of the bright yellow and red traditionally associated with Thor in the comics, or the red and silver and black of the movies, the hero now dons a blue and gold costume, though still with his red cape. In lieu of Mjölnir is Stormbreaker, the powerful ax forged on Nidavellir. This new costume, which is more striking than his previous look, perfectly displays the metamorphosis Thor has gone through. After all, after defeating Thanos and saving the universe from decimation, he plans to seek out his purpose beyond ruling the people of Asgard. Thus, wearing a noticeably different costume might be a hint that he has found and embraced a different side of him.

In Avengers: Endgame, the Asgardian is seen at his lowest. Fat Thor offered an honest look at grief, with the God of Thunder trapped in a cycle of misery, depression, and trauma. As the supposed protector of his people, he failed to do so and lost his entire family along the way. For years, he blamed himself for failing to stop Thanos, but he had the chance to reevaluate himself after hearing his mother Frigga’s (Rene Russo) advice. Once Thor realized that there is a life beyond his birthright, he happily delegated the responsibility of leading the remaining Asgardians to Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson). Although clueless about the future, he had high hopes for his next adventure by the end of Endgame. By the looks of Thor’s blue costume, this journey might have been a success. He has already shed his Asgardian armor, and with it, the weight of the expectations from his past self.

Furthermore, as Thor joins the Guardians of the Galaxy and breaks away from the regality, he might discover his true self. Beneath the warrior he is supposed to be, there is someone leaning toward fun and adventure, and these traits are exemplified by the vibrant colors incorporated in his new costume. Aside from redeeming himself both as a hero and a person, Thor switching his costume is also a way to make him visually distinct from Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thor. Nevertheless, despite Thor’s new blue costume being a smaller, less significant detail in the greater MCU picture post-Avengers: Endgame, it is still a visual signifier of bigger, more impactful changes coming, particularly in Thor: Love & Thunder.
