Warning! Spoilers ahead for Empyre #6

In Marvel's finale to EmpyreThor reminds fans that he's not just the God of Thunder. The plant-based Cotati forces are nearing complete domination of Earth. Once they achieve it, they will eradicate all animal life via their massively destructive Death Blossom. However, in the culminating battle, Thor returns from his quest of self-discovery, imbued with the power of his biological mother.

Some Marvel fans might not know this but Frigga, the wife of Odin, is not Thor's biological mother. In fact, Odin wanted his son to be more powerful than any other Asgardian, so he decided to form a relationship with the goddess Jord. Together, they had a child who would become Thor. However, Jord's true name and identity was Gaea, the goddess of the Earth and mother to several different gods from different pantheons. Essentially, this means that Thor is only half-Asgardian, with the other half a son of the Earth itself. This explains why Thor has always felt a special and unique connection the Earth and its people, desiring to protect them from harm alongside the Avengers.

In Empyre #6 from Al Ewing and Dan Slott, the Cotati leader and messiah Quoi stands ready to unleash the Death Blossom, using the vibranium-enriched soil of Wakanda to increase its power tenfold. However, Earth's Mightiest Heroes stand ready to fight back alongside the Kree and Skrull forces to prevent this from happening. This includes Thor, the Gaea-Son.

Using his newfound power, Thor revokes the power of the Cotati's wizards in her name, taking out a massive portion of the Cotati's power. It will be interesting to see if Thor's new earthly powers will continue into the future as a permanent feature he's able to access, or if this was a one-time thing just for the Empyre event. Thor's quest to learn the ways of his mother was unseen by fans, as the tie-in miniseries Empyre: Thor (which would have come from writer Ram V with art by Pasqual Ferry) was cancelled due to the pandemic along with other tie-ins such as Empyre: Ghost Rider and Empyre: Invasion of Wakanda, among others. It's assumed from the old solicitations that Thor would have attempted to save his mother Gaea, who was teased to be dying from the Cotati's influence.

Regardless, Thor has gone through some insane transformations and additions to his power within the last year. Not only has he be given the additional powers of Gaea in Empyre, but in the current Thor series from Donny Cates, Thor became the Herald of Thunder, gaining cosmic power from Galactus himself. He has also gained even more power as a result of becoming Asgard's new king. This begs the question: is there no limit to how powerful Thor can become?
