Warning: contains spoilers for Thor #17!

The most epic line Thor ever said was just turned against him, and by his own sister nonetheless. Thor is currently the King of Asgard, but while he's as committed as ever to protecting his kingdom, his reign has been marred by huge conflicts in which he's shown staggering hubris. Thor’s failure to lead is causing some discourse between his family members as his mother, Freya, and sister, Angela, are challenging his effectiveness as king. As the whole family sits down for a heart-to-heart, a famous one liner said by the God of Thunder is thrown back in his face, one that he originally said to one of the Avengers’ greatest threats

In Thor #17 written by Donny Cates with art by Michele Bandini and Matthew Wilson, Odin, Angela, Freya, and Thor are fighting mythic beasts in a distant land, but the true conflict resides between them. Freya and Odin are going through marital problems and Freya has changed her godly status from Goddess of Fertility and Marriage to God of the Hunt. At the same time, Thor and his sister Angela quarrel, as Angela reveals that she and Freya don’t believe him to be a good leader for Asgard, saying, “We know of the Black Winter. Of the death of Galactus at your hands. Of Donald Blake. Of the World Serpent... Of the unraveling of Asgard under your rule, Brother. We have seen all of this. And, well... Mother and I would like a word.”

The exchange between Thor and his family is a play on Thor’s best one-liner against the Avengers villain Ultron in 1999’s Avengers #22. In the issue, Ultron is working to destroy the Avengers as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fight to foil the villains' latest plot. As Thor smashes into the Mad Android's base with a cohort of heroes, he declares, Ultron. We would have words with thee. The understated quip makes it clear that Thor has something a little more lasting than a discussion on his mind, so as his sister throws the iconic moment back at him during their exchange, it's clear why Thor is so indignant in his reply. “You, of all people, would have words with me?”

Thor Words with Me Words with Thee

Thor is understandably enraged to be cast in the role of a villain like Ultron, and takes Angela's words as the threat they are. His sister confirms that if he can't rise to the role of king, she - as Odin's actual firstborn - will take it from him, though she at least admits she doesn't actually want the throne. Thor bristles at the insult only to be offered guidance by his mother, but it's a testament to how far Thor has fallen that he's now the one being treated as a dangerous force of destruction.

Thor claimed leadership of Asgard at the conclusion of War of the Realms, and has massively increased in power since. Sadly, however, he has allowed that power to fill him with pride, and was deeply shaken by a vision in which he saw himself killed by Thanos. Like Ultron before him, Thor is scrabbling for control, stopped in his tracks by a warrior Asgardian who is willing to strike him down if that will protect others. Hopefully, having one of his most iconic moments of heroism turned against him will give Thor the perspective to reconsider his approach to ruling Asgard, but if not, fans will likely see Angela make good on her threat, as she makes it clear she's prepared to battle her brother for the good of the Ten Realms.
