Thor: Love & Thunder director Taika Waititi reveals that there are other Thor movie ideas that he would like to explore. Waititi directed 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, which received positive critical reception and was thought by many to reinvigorate the Thor franchise. Now, Waititi directs its follow-up Thor: Love & Thunder, for which he also wrote the screenplay. Love & Thunder will also see the return of Natalie Portman’s character Jane Foster as Mighty Thor, who did not appear in Ragnarok

With the success of Thor: Ragnarok and high anticipation for Thor: Love & Thunder, the next question that has been stirring is whether or not there will be a fifth solo Thor film. While other Avengers have mostly capped at three or four films, including Iron Man and Captain America, many fans of Waititi’s Thor films would be excited to see a fifth installment of the solo Thor movies. Waititi has yet to officially confirm a fifth Thor film nor his involvement, but he has not definitively said that there will not be a Thor film either. Thor star Chris Hemsworth has expressed enthusiasm towards reviving his MCU character, though has yet to hint at anything concretely in development either.

Waititi seems to express agreement with this enthusiastic feeling towards new Thor films, as he reveals ideas for future Thor storylines in a recent interview with Screen Rant. In response to an interview comment about the potential for longevity with Thor, he references the Thor comics and how there are so many “different versions” of the character Thor within them. He also jokes that Thor movies will put Hemsworth in for the long run within his career. Check out the full statement from Waititi and brief response from Hemsworth below:

Taika Waititi: There's all these different versions of Thor in the comics as well. There's the sort of 70-year-old Thor, so [to Chris] get comfy. This is the rest of your life.

Chris Hemsworth: This is it!

While Waititi doesn't confirm the development of Thor 5 in his comments, his enthusiasm towards further sequels is key. With Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi brought his unique sense of humor and directorial vision even as he worked with existing MCU characters, and hopefully, with Thor: Love & Thunder, he will do the same. Audiences would likely welcome another Waititi-led Thor project. Given Waititi’s involvement in writing the screenplays of both films, his openness to the possibility of new storylines and new version of Thor is especially critical to the viability of future solo Thor films.

This being said, a lot now rides on Thor: Love & Thunder. Its success at the box office and with audiences and critics will likely determine the future of the Thor franchise. Thor (2011) and Thor: The Dark World (2013) did not receive nearly the praise from critics and fans as Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. The director, thus, seems critical to the success of the Thor films, and hopefully, he will deliver with Thor: Love & Thunder enough for the world to keep wanting more.
