Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi addresses whether or not there will be a Thor 5 after the upcoming sequel. Since 2008, Marvel Studios has managed to introduce over a dozen iconic members of the Avengers. One of the original figures to help establish the MCU in its early days was Thor, with Chris Hemsworth bringing the God of Thunder to life. Following the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, Thor is now the only remaining character of the original trio, as Iron Man died in Avengers: Endgame, while Steve Rogers retired as Captain America.

The Thor franchise began to shift direction starting with Ragnarok when Waititi boarded the series. Following the success of the Thor threequel due to the director's unique brand of irreverent comedy and stunning visual style, Waititi is back for the fourth installment, Love and Thunder. The upcoming film will see Hemsworth return as the mighty Avenger as he attempts to find inner peace after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. However, Love and Thunder will see Hemsworth's hero forced to put peace aside and team up with Valkyrie, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Jane Foster (now Mighty Thor) to take down the MCU's newest villain: Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale.

While there is a lot of anticipation for Thor: Love and Thunder, the film shouldn't necessarily be seen as the start of a new trilogy, according to Waititi. In a new interview with Fandango, the director was asked about whether or not Love and Thunder could lead into a Thor 5, and Waititi had quite an interesting response. To Waititi, Love and Thunder isn't the start of a new series for Hemsworth's character. In his mind, once Waititi boards a film, he sees it as its own final project. The director shared the following:

"I haven't thought about it as part of a new trilogy, because every time I make a film, I think, 'I'm never doing that again…' because they're just too hard. There's any film and I've done it eight times now. Eight times I've said, 'I think I'm just going to pack it in. I had a good run.' And then sure enough get lured back in with a Yankee dollar. Lured back in by them cookies… and them Oscars."

Despite Waititi's comments, Love and Thunder already appears like it will prove fertile ground for another Thor film. Other than seeing Thor's next chapter and Valkyrie's path as King of Asgard, Love and Thunder will also be adapting a huge arc from the comics as Natalie Portman's Jane Foster becomes Mighty Thor. Hemsworth's Avenger hero will also be teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, including returning characters like Star-Lord, Nebula, Rocket Raccoon, and Drax. With all these new and returning characters, include Bale's new MCU Big Bad, it is not hard to imagine how Waititi and Marvel could extend the hero's story into Thor 5.

That said, it is far too early to tell whether Thor 5 will be a possibility, as Marvel Studios will have to look at Love and Thunder's response critically and commercially. Given the massive anticipation surrounding the film, it seems fair to assume that its success will warrant a sequel. However, based on his comments, it may be a good strategy for Waititi to treat Love and Thunder as a final Thor project, and not leave things unfinished in the hopes of a Thor 5. If Thor 5 were to happen, it would likely not be until Marvel's Phase 6, since Phase 4 and 5's slate are already packed. With Thor: Love and Thunder arriving in theaters next month, time will tell whether or not Thor 5 is in Waititi's future.
