Vin Diesel potentially spoiled Guardians of the Galaxy characters appearing in upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Thor: Love and Thunder. Marvel Studios wrapped up Phase 3 of MCU last year with Avengers: Endgame - and, to a lesser extent, Spider-Man: Far From Home. The ending of Avengers: Endgame paved the way for where many beloved characters will be in the universe going forward. For example, after teaming up in Avengers: Infinity War, Chris Hemsworth's Thor joined the Guardians of the Galaxy on their ship at the end of Endgame, indicating their stories would continue to intersect in Phase 4 and beyond.
But when Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige unveiled the MCU Phase 4 slate at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 last summer, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wasn't on it. Instead, Hemsworth will first reprise his MCU role in Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder, set for a November 2021 release date. James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is in development, as well, but it likely won't release until after Thor 4. Until now, it wasn't known for sure whether fans could expect the Guardians to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder, but one of the actors has spilled the beans.
Speaking to ComicBook.com about his upcoming movie Bloodshot, Vin Diesel discussed his MCU role as Groot, and his appearances in not only Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder. Diesel said:
I am waiting and excited for my friend James Gunn to knock this next one out of the park. He took The Suicide Squad so he's about to embark on it. Thor will also– the director talked to me about how Thor will incorporate some of the Guardians of the Galaxy, which will be very interesting. Nobody knows– maybe I shouldn't have said anything.
It's unclear as of yet what exactly Thor: Love and Thunder's story will be about, though we know Natalie Portman's Jane Foster will return and become Mighty Thor. We also know Christian Bale will play Thor 4's villain, as confirmed by another returning MCU actor, Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie). Since the story isn't known, it remains to be seen how Waititi may incorporate the Guardians of the Galaxy in Thor 4, especially since Avengers: Endgame paved the way for a more Guardians-focused storyline. Perhaps Thor: Love and Thunder will jump forward in time or Portman's Mighty Thor will take on more of a leading role in the movie.
Fans likely guessed that Thor: Love and Thunder would include the Guardians of the Galaxy in some way, but Marvel and Waititi have been tight-lipped on those details, so it's entirely possible Diesel said more about his involvement than he should have. Even still, he didn't reveal too much - he didn't even confirm which Guardians of the Galaxy characters will be in Thor 4. Based on the fact that he's spoken to Waititi, we can presume Groot will be one of them, which makes sense considering he and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) worked with Thor in Infinity War. For now, fans can speculate about how the Guardians of the Galaxy will fit into the story of Thor: Love and Thunder and wait to see what more is revealed about the upcoming MCU movie.
