After being absent from Thor: Ragnarok and the battles that came after it in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Lady Sif is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Thor: Love and Thunder, and through her, the movie can answer an Endgame cliffhanger. With the end of the Infinity Saga also came the end of the arcs of most of the original Avengers, but Thor (Chris Hemsworth) got a rare chance in the MCU and is coming back in his fourth solo movie, and he’s bringing many friends with him, most notably the Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as others that have been absent for a while.

The last time viewers saw Thor, he was leaving Earth with the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of Avengers: Endgame, and he was having a friendly argument with Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) over who’s the real leader. Although plot details about Thor: Love and Thunder are still a mystery, it’s known that it will continue that new partnership with the Guardians and will see the return of Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who is set to become The Mighty Thor in this movie. Thor 4 will also introduce Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) as the villain and will welcome back the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and Lady Sif (Jamie Alexander), and through the latter, and Endgame cliffhanger can be solved.

Before leaving with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor had to make some arrangements on Earth. Thor established New Asgard in Norway with the surviving Asgardians and ruled for a couple of years, but as he knows he’s not made to rule a country (even a small one), he left Valkyrie in charge at the end of Endgame. Valkyrie is now the king of New Asgard, and as teased by Thompson herself, a king needs a queen, and so Thor: Love and Thunder could see Lady Sif ruling New Asgard next to Valkyrie as the queen.

Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie

Although not explored in her MCU appearances so far, as one scene that confirmed it was cut from Thor: Ragnarok, Valkyrie is the first openly bisexual character in this connected universe, and this has been said to be finally explored in Thor: Love and Thunder. Now, there has been a lot of speculation on who could be Valkyrie’s queen in Thor 4, with Jamie Alexander expressing interest in Lady Sif taking that role. Lady Sif appeared in the first two Thor movies and the chemistry between her and the God of Thunder was obvious, but the MCU can make a change and pair her up with Valkyrie instead. Lady Sif has shown to be a great leader, and Valkyrie pretty much led New Asgard while Thor dealt with his depression and PTSD in Avengers: Endgame, so together they would be the best rulers that New Asgard could have. This would also be another step for the MCU in terms of representation, as even though Valkyrie is not the only LGBTQ+ character in the MCU (there’s Eternals’ Phastos), she and Lady Sif are bigger characters and being king and queen would make them part of the story, so their relationship can't be edited out easily.

As mentioned above, plot details of Thor: Love and Thunder are unknown except for Jane becoming Mighty Thor, so it’s a mystery if Lady Sif will have a bigger role this time, but what’s for sure is that there’s a lot of potential in her long-awaited return to the MCU and her dynamic with Valkyrie can be a very interesting one if the MCU is open to being more inclusive – and it can do things right this time.
