New set photos from Thor: Love and Thunder might tease the origins of the film's villain, Gorr the God Butcher. It wasn't long ago that it looked like the Thor franchise was coming to a close, but Thor: Ragnarok successfully rejuvenated interest in the god of thunder. Chris Hemsworth's Thor will now be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe character to star in four solo films.

Thor: Love and Thunder sees the return of director Taika Waititi and also brings Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and the Guardians of the Galaxy back to the MCU. But, the main villain of the movie is Gorr the God Butcher. Marvel confirmed in late 2020 that Christian Bale is playing the powerful Thor antagonist whose sole purpose is to kill the gods of the Marvel universe. Since Gorr has a very alien design in the comics, many fans are interested to know what he'll look like in Thor: Love and Thunder since Bale is playing him. And with production starting this week, the possibility of spotting Gorr has risen.

The first batch of set photos for Thor: Love and Thunder don't show Bale on set as Gorr, but they appear to tease his origin. Daily Mail captured a few images of sets being built in Sydney, Australia's Centennial Park for Thor 4. The set photos show the rugged and barren landscape style sets Marvel is constructing for production, even though Thor 4 will also utilize The Mandalorian's virtual production technology. The rocky terrain is potentially a match for Gorr the God Butcher's home planet.

Gorr the god butcher

Gorr the God Butcher debuted in Marvel Comics in 2013 as part of Jason Aaron's Thor series. During this run, readers saw the true extent of Gorr's origin and why he hated the gods. He was raised on an unnamed planet that struggled to maintain any sense of life due to its poor conditions. This society constantly prayed to the gods to ask for their help, and Gorr lost everyone he loved eventually. He decided that the gods must not be real and was later enraged when he saw two of them fighting to the death. Since Gorr blamed the gods for his terrible life, he used the All-Black Necrosword to slay his first god then and there.

Since Gorr's origin is a key part of his character's motivation, Thor: Love and Thunder needs to include such scenes. Hopefully, these sets are the first sign that Marvel plans to show this tragic backstory in the movie. With multiple photos of this set already circulating online, additional images may come during the actual production. A final look at the set can confirm that this is Gorr's homeworld, so it might not be too long before more Thor: Love and Thunder information is revealed.
