Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Avengers: Endgame.
Thor 4 is something that Marvel fans want, but is it actually going to happen? Anthony and Joe Russo's Avengers: Endgame is out now, and it marks the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Saga that started 11 years ago. Most if not all of the original Avengers won't return in future MCU movies, but that doesn't mean the franchise won't still go on. Given that Thor, Hawkeye, and Hulk are the only three main Avengers left around, they could logically return down the line.
Sadly, Black Widow and Iron Man were killed in Avengers: Endgame, and Captain America went back in time and grew old with the love of his life. But Thor, on the other hand, still has a future in the MCU given the way the latest Marvel blockbuster ended. What's interesting is that Chris Hemsworth was ready to give up on Thor prior to starring in Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok and then later in the Russos' two Avengers movies. Starring in those films revitalized Thor for him - and for audiences.
So now that Thor's story in the Infinity Saga is over, and most of his friends (and co-workers) are done with the MCU, will Hemsworth return for a potential Thor 4? Perhaps. Perhaps not. But if Thor 4 were to happen, it would be considerably different than what people might expect. Here's everything we know about Thor 4 so far.
Thor 4 Isn't Confirmed (Yet)
While Marvel Studios isn't in the habit of officially announcing their movies too far ahead of production starting, there's been no word about Thor 4 aside from it having been discussed. Shortly after Avengers: Endgame released, Valkyrie actress Tessa Thompson said in an interview that Waititi had apparently pitched Thor 4 to Marvel Studios already, but that's all that she had heard at that point. Even though Thor 4 isn't in the works yet, that doesn't mean Marvel isn't mulling over the idea. And given what happens in Avengers: Endgame, considering Thor 4 would be in the studio's best interest.
Thor 4 Release Date Info
Marvel Studios undoubtedly has a plan for MCU Phase 4 and beyond, but things change quite a bit behind the scenes before plans are officially unveiled to the public. So while Thor 4 hasn't been announced, it could still happen seeing as Marvel's current schedule isn't as filled up as it was when they announced their Phase 3 plans way back in 2014. With Black Widow, The Eternals, Shang-Chi, and Doctor Strange 2 coming up first, Thor 4 wouldn't release until 2021 at the earliest, but it would more likely be 2023 or 2024.
Thor 4 Would Have A Different Story
Considering the Avengers: Endgame ending, Thor 4's story wouldn't be what audiences would've expected. Valkyrie is now the queen of Asgard and Thor appears to have joined the Guardians of the Galaxy. So a typical Thor 4 movie couldn't happen until after James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases, seeing as Thor would have to first resolve his position on that team before heading off into another solo movie. Plus, Thor 4's story would be more like Thor: Ragnarok and less like the first two Thor movies, since his journey is no longer tied to Asgard.
