Melissa McCarthy has officially thrown her name in the casting hat for Taika Waititi’s forthcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. The highly anticipated film will be the fourth standalone Thor movie from the MCU and the follow-up to 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, which was a tremendous success and also helmed by Waititi. Thor: Love and Thunder is currently in pre-production in Australia.

Many familiar faces from the Thor universe will return for the film, including Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. Christian Bale has also been confirmed to play the villain Gorr the God Butcher. Fans have also speculated that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki may return for the film, as the MCU also prepares for his new standalone Disney+ show Loki. Most of the Thor: Love and Thunder plot details are unknown for now, though Marvel did confirm that Portman’s Jane will become the first female Thor, or the Goddess of Thunder.

Now it seems that everyone wants a piece of the Thor action, including the always hilarious Melissa McCarthy. Recently, McCarthy posted a video to her Instagram account that features her and her actor husband Ben Falcone professing that they are “desperate” to join the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder. Falcone declares that he has prepared a monologue from The Tempest while McCarthy’s audition will be a piece from The Trip to Bountiful, which she says she has been doing since she was “about 21.” The couple goes on to appeal to Marvel, or “Mar-vel,” as Falcone says, which then turns into a riff on the ice cream company Carvel. McCarthy adds, “Mar-vel, you make a wonderful movie and a wonderful ice cream cake.” They then break into song, which Falcone hilariously proclaims is “just a taste.” He then offers himself up to work the “crafty” (catering) table in case this audition doesn’t go according to their plan, and McCarthy goes on to detail her hummus-making abilities. Though neither actor has worked with Waititi nor appeared in the MCU, fans are fully on board with the unofficial audition tape. The pair adds that they are already in Australia and can therefore be local hires. Thor: Love and Thunder is currently set for a 2022 release and as far as the production goes, Tessa Thompson recently announced that she was headed to Australia in a couple of weeks. In addition to directing, Waititi has also confirmed that he will reprise his role as Korg, an ally of Thor, for which Waititi does the voice and the motion-capture acting.

Given the comedic nature of Thor: Ragnarok, McCarthy and Falcone could be excellent additions to the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder. Considering McCarthy’s massive social media following, the tape could very likely be seen by Waititi, even if only for a laugh. Regardless, comedy is certainly welcomed after this tumultuous year and it seems McCarthy and Falcone have given us a gift that no one asked for, but perhaps everyone needed.
