Matt Damon’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Thor: Love and Thunder should be as his character in Thor: Ragnarok: an actor playing Loki. Although the first three phases of the MCU, collectively known as the Infinity Saga, have come to an end with Spider-Man: Far From Home after reaching their peak with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, it isn’t the end of this connected universe, which will continue expanding with more movies and now TV shows as well, set to stream exclusively on Disney+.

Phase 4 of the MCU will not only introduce new characters, such as the Eternals, Shang-Chi, and Moon Knight and She-Hulk on the TV side of this universe, but it will also continue the stories of characters that have already been introduced. Among those is Thor (Chris Hemsworth), who after a rough start with Thor and Thor: The Dark World, is now getting a fourth solo movie, though he will count with the presence of other big characters, as are the Guardians of the Galaxy. Thor: Love and Thunder will also introduce Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher and will see the return of Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie and Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, as well as an unexpected cast member from Thor: Ragnarok: Matt Damon.

Matt Damon had a cameo appearance in the third Thor movie in the scene where Loki, disguised as Odin, is watching a play about his sacrifice in Thor: The Dark World. In it, Luke Hemsworth played Thor, Sam Neill played Odin, and Matt Damon played Loki, but when the real Thor arrived, Loki’s cover was revealed, and the actors weren’t seen again in the rest of the movie. Now, Matt Damon has reportedly arrived in Australia to film Thor 4, though details about his role in it are unknown. Given that he’s not new to the MCU, having him as a main character would risk creating a plot hole with his role as “Loki actor” in the previous movie, so the best option would be to have him back as that same character.

Thor: Ragnarok stood out not only from the previous Thor movies but also the rest of the MCU thanks to its sense of humor and the development of its characters, things that were mostly absent in the first two Thor movies. Taika Waititi’s unique touch of comedy elevated the movie and proved to be just what Thor as a character needed, and that sense of humor was present in almost every aspect of the movie, such as in the aforementioned scene with the very dramatic recreation of Loki’s “death”. Having a big actor like Matt Damon playing a small part in a big movie for just a couple of seconds was a brilliant choice, and one that is inevitably funny, and “Loki actor” can come back in full force now that the real Loki is truly gone – and with everything else that happened in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, he will have a lot more material to work with.

Thor: Love and Thunder is starting to look like a big reunion post-Endgame with characters from Earth, Asgard/New Asgard, and other parts of the universe, and with Taika Waititi back as director, fans can expect a lot more comedy mixed with action and great visuals, and if Matt Damon isn’t going to reprise his role as “Loki actor”, hopefully his new character won’t create a plot hole, as the MCU already has a bit too many.
