Taika Waititi says Thor: Love and Thunder will double down on the craziness that he brought to Thor: Ragnarok. Chris Hemsworth's Thor has become much more popular with fans over the last few years thanks to his prominent roles in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, but the reinvention of the character began under Waititi's guidance. He largely ditched the Shakesperean approach to the character in Ragnarok in order to take advantage of Hemsworth's comedic abilities.

In doing so, Thor has become a much more beloved MCU character than he was before and reinvigorated Hemsworth's own interest in sticking around. Unlike Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans (who moved on from the MCU following Endgame), Hemsworth signed back up for a fourth solo film. Waititi is writing and directing Thor: Love and Thunder, which will see Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) return and bring Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) back into the fold as she becomes Mighty Thor.

Waititi recently spoke to Wired as part of the press tour for his new film Jojo Rabbit and was asked about his plans for Thor: Love and Thunder. Waititi has finished a version of the script for the film, but he's been reluctant to reveal too many details about it at this point. What he would confirm, though, is that he plans to lean even harder into the weirdness that Ragnarok included.

It's going to be bigger and louder and more bombastic. It's only interesting to me if we're doubling down on how nuts Ragnarok was.

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that this is Waititi's mindset when it comes to Thor: Love and Thunder. During press for Ragnarok, he told Screen Rant that he wanted to make Thor: Ragnarok 2 and not Thor 4, showing a clear divide in his mind between his reinvention of the franchise and what came before. It is unlikely he would've returned if Marvel Studios wasn't going to allow him to continue what he started.

Waititi also has a very specific style and tone to his films that he brought to Ragnarok, and with that film earning great reviews and performing well at the box office, it would be incredibly strange if Waititi was returning to do anything but double-down on what worked. This mindset for Waititi is undoubtedly exciting news for fans of Thor: Ragnarok, but it could make those who are a bit more critical of the film's balance of stakes/emotion and humor concerned that the same could be true of Thor: Love and Thunder.

It remains to be seen how exactly Waititi plans to top the craziness of Ragnarok in Love and Thunder though. Waititi has said that they're still figuring out if Thor will keep his larger figure from Endgame in the sequel. Meanwhile, he's teased that the movie may adapt Jane's breast cancer storyline from the comics in her MCU return. With production slated to begin next year, it won't be too long before we start to learn more about Waititi's bigger plans for Thor: Love and Thunder.
