Taika Waititi explains why Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie isn't thrilled with her administrative duties as King of Asgard in Thor: Love and Thunder. The fourth installment in the franchise, and the God of Thunder's first outing since Avengers Endgame, Thor: Love and Thunder will see the titular deity going up against Gorr the God Butcher and encountering a rich cast of new characters, including Russel Crowe as Zeus. It's not all new faces, as Love and Thunder will also see the return of the franchise's most popular characters, including Natalie Portman's Jane Foster, Waititi's comedic Kronan Korg, and Tessa Thompson as the name-taking Valkyrie.

Making her first appearance in Thor: Ragnarok, Valkyrie was an immediate hit. She became one of Thor's most brutally honest friends with a wise-cracking mouth, a penchant for the bottle, and fists that could level the most formidable fighter. After surviving the blip and fighting alongside the Avengers in Endgame, Love and Thunder sees Valkyrie in a new position, King of New Asgard.

According to Waititi, the throne is sitting too right with Valkyrie. In an interview with Fandango, the director explains that Valkyrie's new role comes with the "responsibilities of basically running a town and looking after her people," but that she is "missing the battlefield." This is because, as Waititi explains, Valkyrie "spent her life as a career soldier" but is now in an "admin job." Read the full quote below:

"She's got all the responsibilities of basically running a town and looking after her people. Where we find her is also missing the battlefield. She spent her entire life as a career soldier and part of the Valkyrie, and now she's kind of got an admin job and she's got a lot of meetings"

Anyone who saw Thor: Ragnarok won't struggle to see how Valkyrie could be bored in her new role. From her very first introduction, she looked like the worst candidate for a menial governance job in a film that included The Hulk, although she might have a few surprises up her sleeves. For one, she can't do a worse job than some of the other Asgardian rulers, as Loki's insane ego only matched Odin's short-sightedness. Therefore, while she may not be happy on the job, she could end up being the ruler the fledgling kingdom needs.

Whatever happens, Thor: Love and Thunder is sure to contain plenty of classic Valkyrie one-liners, a few of which even found their way into the trailer. Much of this will be playing off the presence of Portman's Foster, who will be taking up the mantle of Mighty Thor to fight alongside the existing Asgardians. However, they'll be going up against a mighty enemy in Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher, who has killed every God he's come across and promised by Waititi to be very formidable.
