Taika Waititi has one word to describe his upcoming Marvel film, Thor: Love and Thunder: Romantic. Waititi first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe for 2017's Thor: Ragnarok, a colorful reinvention of Chris Hemsworth's God of Thunder. In addition to directing, Waititi appeared as the scene-stealing Korg, a role he then reprised in Avengers: Endgame. Fans were thrilled when just last year, news broke that Waititi will be back in the director's chair for Love and Thunder, which also marks the first time an MCU hero will have a fourth solo film.

Love and Thunder was initially scheduled for November 2021, but the coronavirus pandemic brought some complications. Hemsworth confirmed back in April that progress on Love and Thunder had been put on hold, and Marvel eventually pushed the film back to February 2022. It remains to be seen when production actually will begin, though it will likely pick up sometime next year. In addition to Hemsworth and Waititi, Love and Thunder will see the returns of Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie) and Natalie Portman (Jane Foster).

During an interview with the BBC, Waititi shared an update on Love and Thunder's progress. Waititi confirmed he and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson have finished the script and he's "actually this week, doing another pass on it." While Waititi obviously didn't let any plot details slip, he did insist "I think it’s going to be really good." In terms of the tone for Love and Thunder, Waititi shared that the Marvel sequel is actually very romantic. As Waititi explained:

It is so insane and also very romantic. I’m into romances now. I just want to make a romance. I want to make something that I’ve never done or never cared for. I would like to attack something like that.

Based on the title alone, it makes sense that Love and Thunder would have a romantic element. However, it's particularly interesting that Waititi is choosing to essentially call it a romance. There are plenty of opportunities for some serious romantic subplots in Love and Thunder. Jane's return for the first time since Thor: The Dark World is bound to stir up some past tension with Thor, and Thompson confirmed Valkyrie is looking for her queen as the MCU's first openly bisexual hero. Marvel movies are often at their strongest when they dip into other genres beyond the standard superhero realm, so this could be a really interesting angle for Love and Thunder.

At this point, it's safe to say that anticipation is quite high for Love and Thunder. Fans have a lot of questions about the project, from whether or not Loki (Tom Hiddleston) will be back to who exactly Christian Bale is playing. Sadly, with production not likely to begin until next year (or perhaps even later this year), it might be a while before new information is revealed. However, it's still a positive sign that the script for Love and Thunder is just about complete, and that Waititi is feeling really positive about it. Some might even say he's in love.
