Natalie Portman has started her superhero training to play Jane Foster aka Mighty Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder. It wasn't long ago that Portman's time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe appeared to be over. After playing Thor's main love interest in the first two Thor films and a bad experience on Thor: The Dark World, Portman didn't return for Thor: Ragnarok. This is why it came as such a surprise when Portman walked out on the stage of San Diego Comic-Con 2019 to confirm her involvement in Thor 4.

Even though Portman will play the same MCU character as before, Jane will be quite different this time around. Taika Waititi's sequel is heavily inspired by Jason Aaron's acclaimed Thor runs, which saw Jane become the new Thor, known as Mighty Thor. From the moment that Portman's return in Thor: Love and Thunder was revealed, she has teased the eventual physical transformation she will go through to become jacked enough to play a superhero.

Now, Portman has confirmed that she has started training to get in superhero shape. During a recent interview with Yahoo, Portman was asked to spill the beans on what the Phase 4 MCU movie will hold. She obviously can't say much of anything about the movie itself, so Portman instead used this opportunity to confirm that her journey to become a superhero has officially begun.

I can’t tell you that much. I’m really excited. I’m starting to train, to get muscles. If there can be all these female superheroes, the more of them they are, the better it is.

The workout regimes of those who play superheroes on the big screen are relentless, but Portman has long appeared to be up to the challenge. She's gone through physical transformations for roles in the past but nothing quite like what Marvel might have in store. Of course, it remains to be seen exactly how they plan to pull off Portman's Mighty Thor look. The comics used the power of Mjolnir to physically transform Jane into someone with a god-like physique, but the MCU hasn't shown Mjolnir to have such powers yet.

Whatever transformation Portman does undergo for Thor: Love and Thunder will be even more fascinating to see depending on what Jane's arc in the movie becomes. Waititi has yet to confirm that his movie will keep Jane's cancer storyline, which is a prominent aspect of her time as Thor. The comics explained that the power of Mjolnir wiped any chemotherapy out of Jane's body every time she transformed into Thor, resulting in her use of these powers keeping Jane's normal body from getting better. If Thor: Love and Thunder does include Jane's cancer storyline, then Portman won't be jacked throughout the movie, as Marvel could use VFX to make her look frail without Mjolnir.
