Russell Crowe has joined the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder in a top-secret role. Marvel Studios announced its Phase 4 slate in 2019, and after many changes caused by COVID-19, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is starting to get back on track. This includes wrapping and continuing filming on several projects, such as Thor: Love and Thunder. Marvel announced the movie at San Diego Comic-Con two years ago with Taika Waititi returning to direct and Chris Hemsworth back to star.

The fourth Thor movie already boasts one of the best ensembles for a "solo" MCU movie so far. Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie is returning, and Natalie Portman's Jane Foster will transform into Mighty Thor. Christian Bale joined the MCU to play Thor: Love and Thunder's villain, Gorr, the god butcher. The movie will also include appearances by every current member of the Guardians of the Galaxy and Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander). Other new cast members include Melissa McCarthy as fake Hela, and now it appears Russell Crowe will be seen as well.

According to Deadline, Russell Crowe joined the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder in a top-secret role. Crowe's involvement was revealed after the actor was spotted with the cast and crew at an Australian rugby game. Marvel hoped to keep the part a secret reportedly to surprise viewers with a "fun cameo," but now fans will be left to wonder who the Gladiator and Man of Steel actor plays in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Unhinged Russell Crowe

As one of the biggest movie stars of the 2000s, Crowe's addition to Thor: Love and Thunder only adds to an already accomplished ensemble. It pairs the New Zealand-born actor with fellow New Zealander, Waititi, and could be a 3:10 to Yuma reunion with Bale if Crowe's character interacts with Gorr at all. Without any details on who Crowe will play, Marvel fans will be able to spend the next several months speculating who it could be. No matter what the answer is, it doesn't sound like Crowe will be in Thor: Love and Thunder too much. With his pedigree, though, hopefully, there is room for him to return in future MCU projects.

As far as who Crowe could play in Thor: Love and Thunder, there are quite a few fun possibilities. He could join Matt Damon, Sam Neill, Luke Hemsworth, and Melissa McCarthy as the Asgardian actors recreating events from Thor: Ragnarok. Crowe could hilariously play Hulk in the recreation and provide a great deal of comedy to the scenes. If Crowe is joining Thor: Love and Thunder for a chance at a bigger MCU future, becoming the voice of Beta Ray Bill could be another intriguing possibility. There are also options like Crowe playing Odin's brother Cul Borson, Thor's half-brother Balder the Brave, or a future version of old Thor. The MCU has no shortage of roles Crowe could play in Thor: Love and Thunder, but we'll have to wait until 2022 to find out.
