Karen Gillan, who portrays Nebula in the MCU, says that Chris Hemsworth's Thor is hilarious in the upcoming sequel, Thor: Love & Thunder. Thor first joined the MCU in his 2011 self-titled film, followed by the 2013 sequel Thor: The Dark World. While the first two films in the Thor franchise had humorous moments like any film within Marvel's interconnected universe, no one would consider them overly hilarious by any means. Thor: The Dark World also didn't connect with fans the way other MCU entries did, so when it came time for a third Thor film, Marvel turned to Taika Waititi to helm the project in hopes that they could liven up the franchise.

Waititi is a master of comedic filmmaking, which he proved with What We Do in the Shadows, but he can also expertly weave comedy with dramatic beats, which he did with Hunt for the Wilderpeople. So when Waititi was tapped for Thor: Ragnarok, audiences expected a more humorous and heartfelt take on the character, and when Thor: Ragnarok premiered in 2017, that's exactly what the film delivered. Ragnarok was praised for being a more colorful Thor film while telling an emotional story with big action set pieces. As a result, Ragnarok was a massive success with audiences, which saw Waititi brought back to direct the upcoming fourth film, Thor: Love & Thunder.

Gillan has been making the rounds to promote her upcoming film Gunpowder Milkshake, and when speaking with Collider, she was asked about Thor: Love & Thunder. Gillan's Nebula is slated to appear in the upcoming film, and according to her, "Thor is even more hilarious." She was excited about the script, calling it "a hell of a ride." Check out Gillan's comments below:

“My reaction reading the script was excitement. It was like this is gonna be a hell of a ride. It’s Taika at his best and his most Taika. The Guardians in it I think are just hilarious, and also Thor is even more hilarious than he was the last time.”

Karen Gillan as Nebula in the MCU

Nebula and the other Guardians of the Galaxy, including Chris Pratt's Star-Lord, are expected to appear. At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Thor departed on Star-Lord's ship along with the Guardians when Thanos was finally defeated. Thor: Love & Thunder will pick up following those events, and it will also bring back Natalie Portman's Jane Foster. Details about the sequel are still tightly guarded, but it is known that Portman's character will follow a similar comic book storyline where Jane Foster was deemed worthy of wielding Thor's hammer, Mjolnir. That storyline sees Foster take on the Thor mantle while Thor himself was unable.

With Waititi co-writing the script, directing, and even reprising his role as Korg, audiences expect an intense yet humorous film, much like Ragnarok. Gillan's comments about the script help solidify fan expectations while also leaving a mystery around the overall story. More details about the film will be shared as it draws closer to its release date, and a trailer is likely to come out before the end of the year. Thor: Love & Thunder is currently slated to release on May 6, 2022.
