Idris Elba's recent comments may have teased his surprise appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder as Heimdall. The actor is currently busy promoting his upcoming film, James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. He plays Bloodsport, a new member of Task Force X in this follow-up/soft reboot to the 2016 David Ayer film. But while he's about to begin his new journey in the DCEU, he was once an important Asgardian in the MCU.

Debuting in Kenneth Branagh's Thor in 2011, Heimdall functioned as the gatekeeper of Asgard and was a loyal friend to the God of Thunder. From there, Elba reprised the role in the next two solo outings for the Avenger in Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarokhe also appeared briefly in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron as part of the Asgardian Prince's vision regarding the Infinity Stones. Heimdall was with the Asgardian refugee ship that was traveling to relocate to Earth at the start of Avengers: Infinity War. Sadly, he met his end after Thanos (Josh Brolin) personally killed him for sending Hulk to Sanctum Sanctorum to warn the Earth's Mightiest Heroes that the Mad Titan was coming.

Since he didn't perish from the Snap, Heimdall's death stuck, and he wasn't resurrected in Avengers: Endgame. Now, however, Elba may be teasing that fans may have not seen the end of him in the MCU. When asked by Comicbook about being "seemingly" dead while promoting The Suicide Squad, he leaned on the idea that he may not be gone at all, effectively stirring rumors that he will be in Thor: Love and Thunder.

"I think that I'm excited about the possibilities in the DC world. And I think the word of choice to make note of is the word 'seemingly.'"

Heimdall in Thor Ragnarok

It's worth noting that leading up to the principal photography for the fourth Thor film in Australia, Elba was spotted hanging out with director Taika Waititi vising the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team. At this point, the coronavirus pandemic is still at its peak, and any form of travel was discouraged or downright banned. So, it's possible that he was already secretly part of the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder for him to easily go on this trip with Waititi. No comment from Marvel Studios has been made regarding the initial wave of rumors, but Elba's latest response is reinvigorating claims that he will make an unexpected appearance in the upcoming MCU film.

There are various ways to include Heimdall in Thor: Love and Thunder. For starters, he might have survived the blast of the ship, just like Thor, and somehow found his way to New Asgard. This means, however, that none of the deaths in Infinity War stuck, as every MCU hero who supposedly died in the movie somehow came back. Otherwise, it could be for a flashback sequence so as to preserve the integrity of his death.
