James Gunn is consulting on Thor: Love and Thunder with regard to the treatment of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the upcoming Marvel Studios film. Announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, the project brings back director Taika Waititi to the MCU after the success of Thor: Ragnarok. He reunites with Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie.

Thor: Love and Thunder marks the return of Natalie Portman in the MCU as Jane Foster, only this time, she's set to have a bigger role assuming the superhero persona as Mighty Thor. Jamie Alexander's Lady Sif will be back as well after sitting out Ragnarok due to a scheduling conflict. But aside from characters from the God of Thunder's own sub-franchise, the upcoming sequel will also feature Star-Lord and the Guardians of the Galaxy after Avengers: Infinity War made it clear that they have great chemistry with Thor.

Given that, it makes sense Gunn is somehow involved in Thor: Love and Thunder being the primary creative force behind the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy and as it turns out, he is. Asked by a fan on Twitter about this, the filmmaker confirms that he's consulting for the project. He also assured everyone that the cosmic heroes are in good hands with Waititi. Check out his tweet below:

Other than Gunn, only Joe and Anthony Russo have utilized the Guardians of the Galaxy on the screen as they also appeared in Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Waititi is the third filmmaker to handle the characters as they factor in Thor: Love and Thunder. It's worth noting that Gunn also consulted with the Russos with how to best approach the cosmic heroes; in fact, he was part of the discussion when deciding Gamora's fate in Infinity War considering that her supposed death and eventual return in Endgame will have a big impact in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This doesn't mean, however, that Waititi won't be able to use the characters the way he wants to in his film. If anything, it's more to ensure that the continuity is preserved and that they end up in a place that won't derail Gunn's future plans for them.

While both Gunn and Waititi are known for their humor, their brand of comedy is very distinct from each other. Given this, it's interesting to see what the Thor: Love and Thunder filmmaker will be able to accomplish with the Guardians of the Galaxy at his disposal in his latest MCU project. At this point, it's uncertain how involved they will be in the God of Thunder's upcoming adventure — they might not even be in the film for too long. But if Infinity War proved anything, Thor with any of the Guardians of the Galaxy will always be a good thing.
