The latest trailer for Taika Waititi's second entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Love and Thunder, just arrived, revealing brand-new details about the next installment in Hollywood's biggest franchise of all time.

Though the latest insight into the film only gives the audience a brief taste of what to expect when the film releases on July 8th, it carries with it several incredibly intriguing details that may betray larger revelations about the film in its entirety.

Could It Be A Frame Tale?

thor 4 Korg tells story to alien species

The newest trailer opens with Taika Waititi's beloved Kronan, Korg, professing the tale of Thor Odinson to a group of intrigued listeners. He appears to be preparing to relay the events of Love and Thunder to his audience, indicating that this moment may occur after the main plot of the film has wrapped up.

This scene could indicate that Love and Thunder will be presented as a frame tale, wherein Korg acts as the narrator of the film's events, relaying the story to both his listeners and the moviegoing public. If this is the case, the absence of Thor himself as the story is told could hint at the thunder god's death at the hands of Gorr the God Butcher.

A Little Help From My Friends

Thor 4 thor pulls guardians' ship

When MCU fans last saw Thor in Avengers: Endgame, he had gotten out of shape as a result of his failure against Thanos five years prior. Love and Thunder has confirmed that Thor will return to his signature physique, with the latest trailer depicting the son of Odin working out by pulling the Guardians' ship, the Benetar, using nothing but brute strength as its thrusters work against him.

While it is no surprise that the Guardians will appear in this film, this shot does give a hint about their role in the film, as they are depicted helping Thor with his workout regiment. This could indicate that the Guardians will act as a support system for Thor, who must recover both physically and emotionally from his encounters with Thanos.

It Has Been 8 Years Since Jane & Thor Have Seen Each Other

Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster in The Dark World

After reuniting with Thor, Jane Foster wonders how long it has been since they had last seen each other, suggesting it's been three or four years. However, Thor, who has clearly felt their separation more than she, confirms that it has been "eight years, seven months, and six days, give or take."

While this moment plays as a joke, it actually proves vitally important in determining the timeline of Love and Thunder. Since Thor and Jane are still together during Age of Ultron, it is likely that their last encounter occurred in that general timeframe, probably 2015 or 2016. Eight years thereafter would place this film in the 2023-2024 window, squarely in line with the most recent MCU installments, which have mostly taken place in late 2024. Additionally, Jane's miscalculation could allude to her having died in Thanos's snap, explaining why it has only felt like three years for her since she had last seen Thor.

Black Panther Connection

Love and Thunder - Jane, Valkyrie, Bast, Black Panther

One of the most intriguing recent reveals about Love and Thunder actually comes from a promotional photo released in conjunction with the latest trailer. In this still, Jane and Valkyrie are depicted in thrones, sitting with a new character whose introduction has colossal implications for the future of the MCU.

According to The DisInsider, this new face is actress Akosia Sabet, who is reported to be playing Bastet, otherwise known as Bast, in the film. Bast, as audiences will remember, is a goddess with African origins who is the patron deity of the Black Panther throughout history in the MCU. If this is truly Sabet's character, this would point to a connection between the latest Thor film and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which is set to be released this November.

Thor Still Loves Jane

Thor Love Thunder MCU timeline Jane when

Now that Jane and Thor have reunited after over eight years apart, it has quickly become clear that the thunder god never really got over his ex-girlfriend, whom he increasingly seems uncomfortable around. When called out by Valkyrie, Thor immediately denies these feelings, doing a very poor job of hiding the truth.

It's known that Jane Foster has been an integral part of Thor comic books for decades, but has struggled to find her place in the MCU. Now that she has returned as the Mighty Thor, the stage might be set for her long-term tenure in the franchise as Thor's primary love interest--and as a hero in her own rite.

Celestial Sightings

Thor 4 Jane powers up in teple

One of the final shots before the trailer's colorful title card shows Jane Foster in her Mighty Thor getup, holding Mjölnir upward as she powers up. Behind her are several busts of what appear to be different Celestials and other cosmic entities, including the Living Tribunal. Alongside the Tribunal are other unidentified entities that may include Lady Death, Eternity, and Entropy.

The emergence of the Celestials in recent years signifies that the MCU is headed to adapting some of the very deepest comic book lore. While the Celestials have appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy and Eternals, the far more powerful cosmic entities like the Living Tribunal have yet to make their debut. This temple behind Jane may be the first step in rectifying that situation.

Godly Feud

Thor 4 Russell Crowe as Zeus

The latest sneak peek at Thor: Love and Thunder more directly shows Russell Crowe's Zeus, lending even further credence to the idea that Zeus's son Hercules could appear in the film. While the nature of the Greek pantheon's presence in the film was previously unknown, it would appear that he has captured Thor, holding him captive and on display for the other gods.

This seems to reveal that Zeus and the other Greek gods will not have an amicable relationship with Thor and his friends. Whether this stems from an old-fashioned inter-pantheon rivalry between different religions or a more nefarious purpose on the part of Zeus remains to be seen, but fans shouldn't expect him and Thor to see eye-to-eye in this particular film, at least until Gorr gives them a common enemy to fight against.

Gorr's Look

Thor Love & Thunder's Gorr The God Butcher

This trailer truly broke the internet by finally revealing the highly-anticipated Gorr the God Butcher, who is portrayed by Christian Bale. This character, who has never been seen in live-action before, is devoid of any coloration, with the exception of his piercing yellow eyes, invoking the artistic stylings of famous comic book artists like Frank Miller and Esad Ribic.

Gorr's appearance is quite reminiscent of his look from the comics, originated by comic book artist Esad Ribic in 2013, with a few notable changes, including the presence of the character's nose, which was absent in Ribic's depiction. Nevertheless, Gorr's look is truly terrifying, signifying that he may be one of the MCU's best villains yet.

The Crusade

Thor 4 Gorr reaches for his sword in front of a rising sun

With Gorr finally onscreen for audiences to see, the god butcher declares his purpose of killing every deity in the universe, citing their selfishness and lack of purpose as their crimes. Using his mysterious and cinematic signature sword, Gorr intends to wipe any and all gods out of existence entirely.

Perhaps even more terrifying than his unnerving appearance is the fact that Gorr could actually win in his battle against Thor. The god butcher has clearly already killed beings far more intimidating than Thor, as evidenced by the skeleton of Falligar the Behemoth, which appeared in both trailers thus far. Gorr's power to fell gods of such size and power should make fans worry for the fate of their favorite Norse god and his friends.

Passing The Baton?

Thor Love and Thunder Odinson and Jane Foster

The latest trailer for Love and Thunder includes far more scenes with Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor. She appears to match her predecessor on every level, perhaps indicating that she might be being set up as Thor's replacement in the MCU.

While the character of Thor has gone through quite the rejuvenation period over the last several years, beginning with Thor: Ragnarok in 2017, Chris Hemsworth may be nearing the end of his time in the franchise, causing Marvel to set up possible characters to take his place after his departure. Love and Thunder may be the perfect place to do so, perhaps even with Jane Foster herself.
