Thor: Love and Thunder producer, Brad Winderbaum, has revealed that Thor’s roommate Darryl could potentially return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The deadpan side character made his first MCU appearance in the Team Thor short directed by Taika Waititi to help shed light on the whereabouts of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) during the events of Captain America: Civil War. Not only did Team Thor and Darryl help provide audiences with an update on Thor’s adventures between films, but they also helped prime audiences for the tone and comedic stylings that Waititi would bring to the MCU with his debut film, Thor: Ragnarok.

Darryl debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2016 Team Thor short. A playful spin on the “Team Cap” and “Team Iron Man” dynamic that surrounded Captain America: Civil War, the short caught up with the titular Asgardian as he attempted to decipher the mystery of the Infinity Stones while living with his comparatively dull roommate, Darryl (Daley Pearson). The offbeat, comedic sensibilities of Team Thor proved incredibly popular among fans, subsequently leading to Team Thor: Part 2, as well as Team Darryl, which saw Darryl becoming roommates with The Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) after the events of Ragnarok.

Speaking with Slashfilm during the recent junket for Marvel’s Disney+ series, What If…? Brad Winderbaum, who is also an executive producer on the Thor films, addressed questions about Darryl re-entering the MCU fold in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder. Without guaranteeing anything, Winderbaum made it clear that nothing was off the table. He said, "Well, maybe you might get more Darryl. It’s possible."

Before fans get too excited at the notion of Darryl potentially coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s worth remembering that nothing is confirmed yet. Brad Winderbaum’s comments make it clear that Darryl can return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that doesn’t guarantee a reunion between the God of Thunder and his old roommate. All this does is leave the door open for Daley Pearson to return. So much is already happening in Thor: Love & Thunder between Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) taking on the mantle of Thor to the introduction of Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), that it remains to be seen if there is even room for Darryl.

If the door is open for Darryl to return, there are plenty of ways to make it happen. One of the most obvious would be to simply debut another short centering on his continued exploits in the more mundane corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Another way would be to finally bring him into the proper MCU fold by allowing him to show up in Thor: Love and Thunder, the next feature in the God of Thunder’s solo franchise. However, with Loki and What If…? fleshing out the multiversal aspects of the MCU, anything is officially possible, which means audiences may meet a brand-new variant of Darryl unlike anything they have seen before. Regardless of whether Darryl comes back, audiences will return to the Asgardian corner of the MCU when Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on May 6, 2022.
