Thor: Love & Thunder will introduce viewers to Gorr the God Butcher, a big villain in Thor’s comic book history and who will be played by Christian Bale. Although a first official look at the movie hasn’t been released, set photos showed a bit of what Bale will look like as Gorr – and here’s how it compares to the comics. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has given most of its main characters a trilogy of solo movies, and Thor is the first to get four. Thor made his debut in 2011, and though he had a rocky start, he went through some necessary changes in Thor: Ragnarok, which allowed him to stay in the MCU a bit longer.

Thor’s fourth solo adventure is titled Thor: Love and Thunder, but he won’t exactly be alone. The God of Thunder will count on the help of Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and the Guardians of the Galaxy, with whom he left Earth at the end of Avengers: Endgame, and it will also see the return of Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who will take on the mantle of the Mighty Thor. The villain to defeat in Thor: Love and Thunder will be Gorr the God Butcher, a character seeking revenge against all Gods and who will be played by Christian Bale, marking his MCU debut.

Gorr the God Butcher comes from a planet where his people did everything in their power to survive the harsh conditions and so prayed to the Gods, but when his family died, Gorr began to question his faith and took it out on the Gods. This made him an outcast, and he later learned that Gods do exist when he saw a battle between two of them, one of them wielding a sword which turned out to be the All-Black Necrosword, which bonded with him and helped him kill one of the Gods. After that, his quest to kill every God out there began, earning the name “The God Butcher”. Gorr’s appearance is as intimidating as his actions, and judging by set photos from Thor: Love and Thunder, Christian Bale will be sporting a look very similar to the one in the comics.

The pictures show Bale in an off-white costume and makeup, and as they were taken from a distance, it's hard to see smaller details. Of course, there surely is more work to be done on his physical appearance (especially as Gorr has a very peculiar structure) in post-production, but so far, Bale's costume looks as comic accurate as it can get without compromising the MCU's "realistic" style. In the source material, Gorr is also grey and wears a black cape with a hood, but what makes him stand out is his bright white eyes and flat nose (that could be even compared to that of Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter saga). As mentioned above, Bale’s makeup and costume appear to lack the black details, which raises questions as to whether the black detailing on his body will be added in post-production or will come once he bonds with the Necrosword in the movie.

Most details about Thor: Love and Thunder have been kept under wraps, and understandably so, as it will see some big events with Jane’s transformation into the Mighty Thor, the God of Thunder teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and the introduction of Gorr (and, quite possibly, the Necrosword as well), and all these can have big consequences in the MCU. Fans of Marvel Comics can rest assured knowing that it all points at Gorr the God Butcher getting a comic-accurate costume in Thor: Love and Thunder, and he will surely look as menacing as he does in the source material.
