With a title like Thor: Ragnarok, it's worth wondering if the third Thor movie will follow the story in the comics about the destruction of Asgard. But the inclusion of Hulk only complicates this, as some hints have suggested 'Planet Hulk' is going to factor into the story somehow. Hulk's signature gladiator armor has already been revealed, but Surtur has also been confirmed to appear as well, giving both stories another necessary piece to the puzzle. Then there is the inclusion of Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), Hela (Cate Blanchett), Skurge (Karl Urban), and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) whose roles generally still remain a mystery.
While Hela's role will be that of the main villain as she overtakes Asgard and banishes Thor, there has not been much said about the other three newcomers. If the newest rumored plot points are true, fans should have a better understanding at how each will be used.
Schmoes Know is reporting they have learned how Grandmaster, Skurge, and Valkyrie factor into the story, and why the movie is titled Ragnarok. Grandmaster's role likely won't be a surprise to those familiar with the character from the comics, but the report does indicate a departure for Skurge. There are also a few other interesting tidbits from the plot in the description below:
"While on Ragnarok, Thor and Hulk end up having to fight their way out in the arenas. The arenas are run by The Grandmaster who has a rather tough enforcer named Skurge (Karl Urban) who plays a big part in the plot of the film. While fighting in the arenas Thor runs into the beautiful Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) a fellow contestant. The two earn each other’s respect and plot a way off the planet. Somehow, Skurge turns to the light and helps them escape. How this all unfolds is still a mystery."
The first thing to note is that Ragnarok appears to be the name of the planet in which Grandmaster's games are played. This is certainly a departure from the comics and raises some questions as to how much of the film will take place here. Even if this is the case, it still seems as though the film could adapt portions of the destruction of Asgard, otherwise it would be a surprise for the subtitle to be the name of a planet. Skurge helping Grandmaster before turning good is also interesting since most had thought that he would be the muscle to Hela's attack.
As for the heroes, the phrasing of this report is certainly interesting. It sounds as though only Valkyrie and Thor make it off of Ragnarok, while Hulk mysteriously stays behind. Ruffalo did not spend very much time on set, so could this actually mean that the film is more about Valkyrie and Thor instead of Thor and Hulk? It would be surprising given how much those involved with the film have played up the relationship between the two Avengers. What is more likely the case and is what everyone was already assuming would happen, is Valkyrie, Thor, and Hulk escape Ragnarok and travel together to stop Hela's evil plot. For now, this is just a rumor, but does sound plausible for the film.
