Precious few relationships are as meaningful as those shared between a God and his hammer and understandably, Thor is saddened over the destruction of Mjolnir in a new clip from the forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe entry, Thor: Ragnarok. The third solo outing for Chris Hemsworth's muscle-bound Asgardian sees the arrival of Hela, the Goddess of Death who swiftly directs her attention towards Thor's home world. With the situation looking desperate, Thor must turn to friends and foes alike for aid, forming a ragtag team of characters that include his adopted brother Loki, fellow Asgardian Valkyrie and "friend from work" Bruce Banner.
The trailers released in the lead-up to Ragnarok have included a number of memorable moments but undoubtedly one of the most significant is the destruction of Thor's trusty hammer Mjolnir at the hands of Hela. The weapon is, of course, only able to be held by the worthy and MCU fans will remember that even the mighty Captain America was merely able to lift the item a fraction. As such, the image of Hela not only catching Mjolnir in a single hand but then going on to effortlessly destroy it were both shocking and exciting in equal measure.
The ramifications of this loss will seemingly ripple throughout Thor: Ragnarok, as a clip exclusively shown on Jimmy Kimmel Live hilariously demonstrates. The scene sees Thor arming up for a gladiatorial bout and lamenting the destruction of Mjolnir to a nearby - and very well-spoken - competitor. Describing how the hammer was made from a special metal and would...ahem, pull Thor off if he spun it really fast, Thor's rocky new friend (played by Ragnarok director Takia Waititi) astutely identifies how much of an impact losing his trademark weapon has had upon the God of Thunder.
Not only is the clip another example of the brilliant humor at the heart of Thor: Ragnarok but it, reassuringly, confirms that the best jokes weren't all crammed into the trailer. Chris Hemsworth's fine comedic chops are once again on display and it also appears that there will plenty of interesting, new characters thrown into the mix courtesy of the planet Sakaar.
The absence of Mjolnir will also likely mean that fans will get to witness a very different side to Thor that has yet to be exhibited in the character's solo outings or during his time with The Avengers. In a similar manner to Tony Stark's "if you're nothing without this suit then you shouldn't have it" lesson from Spider-Man: Homecoming, it'll be fascinating to see how the Asgardian copes once stripped of his most powerful asset.
With that said, many fans will be hoping to see some hammer-based action at some point in Ragnarok, whether that be prior to its destruction or after a potential repair job later in the movie. Fight scenes featuring Mjolnir are unfailingly entertaining and it would be a shame if Thor: Ragnarok marked the weapon's final appearance in the MCU.
