Marvel Studios may have only released one film from Phase 3 of its Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, but they are way ahead of the curve in getting other upcoming films ready. Doctor Strange is just about a month away from hitting theaters. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been wrapped for a few months, and Spider-Man: Homecoming has now production too. Next up for Marvel will be completing Thor: Ragnarok, which sounds like it will be the craziest Thor movie yet. Chris Hemsworth is back as the god of thunder, but will also have the help of Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk in this film.
The movie is set to be a road trip across the galaxy that will windup with both heroes becoming the pawns of The Grandmaster’s games. This is where fans of the Planet Hulk storyline from the Marvel comics could see parts of the story make it onto the big screen – and Ragnarok‘s director is now teasing another possible connection.
Taika Waititi is making the leap from indie films to giant blockbusters with Ragnarok and has been given a lot of toys to play with. Fans are hoping his sense of humor will help breathe a new life into the franchise and he appears to be paying close attention to the comics to make sure hardcore readers happy. Waititi recently took to Instagram to tease the appearance of Korg in his upcoming film.
Korg is sure to be a character that many people will not be too familiar with. He is a member of the Kronans race and teamed up with Hulk in the Planet Hulk story. He and Hulk eventually became friends after Hulk forced him to kill his brother, but Korg will likely not get the amount of screen time necessary to play out that entire story. Instead, an appearance from him could very well just be an easter egg for comic fans as he could be one of the countless opponents Hulk or Thor fight.
Some thought Korg had already appeared in the MCU – as the rock monster that Thor destroys with a single swing in Thor: The Dark World. At the time, fans speculated that the unnamed creature was Korg, but he is undeniably dead so that does not seem to be the case. Waititi and Marvel could very well make that creature be Korg’s brother to add another connection to previous adventures, but that could be an unnecessary story to have. If Korg does appear, it will likely not be for too long, but we will have to wait and see.
