The new This Is Us season 5 teaser offers fans' first look at Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Madison's (Caitlin Thompson) budding romance. While the Pearsons return to the small screen is slightly delayed this year due to coronavirus, NBC's latest promotional clip for the popular family drama hypes the nearing release of new episodes. Part of what people are most excited about the new year is seeing how the show's latest love line progresses with Number One cozying up with the mother of his unborn twins.
Season 4's finale of This Is Us took viewers further into the future, revealing what lies ahead for the Pearsons as they deal with what seems to be the final days of Rebecca (Mandy Moore). The upcoming fifth season, however, won't be picking up from where the show left off; as it was in the past, This Is Us season 5 will pick up with the Big Three and Jack's (Milo Ventimiglia) birthday. Unlike previous celebrations, however, it's a little bit trickier this year with a lot of in-fighting, particularly between Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Kevin. However, aside from that, there are also some personal arcs that the show will need to tackle.
That includes Kevin's fatherhood journey, as highlighted in the new teaser for This Is Us. Clocking in at 30 seconds, the clip features a mix of old and new footage, including a shot of Randall and Kevin's reunion after their intense confrontation in the season 3 finale, as well as, a touching moment between Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan). Arguably the most important snippet from the video, however, is the shot of Kevin carefully rubbing Madison's growing bump as she lovingly gazes at him. Watch it below:
Kevin has long been wanting to be a father. He was set on the idea, causing his conflict and eventual split with his ex-girlfriend, Zoe (Melanie Liburd), who didn't want to have kids. Considering his haphazard decision to commit to Madison not long after she said she's pregnant with his twins, there's a possibility that things don't go as smoothly as they want between them. As established before in This Is Us, Kevin's spontaneity often leads him to make bad decisions, including marrying Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge) in a shotgun ceremony. It's worth noting that in the season 4 flashforward, there was no mention of Madison, although Kevin is wearing a wedding ring. It's possible that the show pulls off one big twist for Number One and have him end up with someone else.
Aside from Kevin and Madison's relationship, there are also other intriguing moments in the This Is Us season 5 teaser. At one point, Rebecca delivers a pep talk, presumably to her kids, saying that it's time they begin a new chapter. Given her appearance, it's safe to say that this was in aftermath of Jack's tragic death. This decision could lead up to Rebecca moving forward with her life and reconnecting with Miguel (Jon Huertas), resulting in their own love affair.
This Is Us season 5 premieres on October 27.
