This Is Us' new mystery character Cassidy Sharp may very well be the mother of Kevin's (Justin Hartley) son in the future. The season 3 finale was fans' first look at the Pearsons' future, and while it answered a slew of lingering questions, it also posed new ones - including the identity of Kevin's son. In the present time, Number 1 has just broken up with Zoe (Melanie Liburd) after they can't find a middle ground about kids (he wants them, she doesn't). This implies that Kevin eventually gets what he wants, although it was never revealed who his mother is. There's also no mention of whether or not she's still in Kevin's life.
NBC's hit family drama is finally back with fresh episodes after being on hiatus for five months. The premiere for season 4 introduced a string of new players that will eventually come in contact with the Pearson family - one of whom is U.S. army soldier Cassie, played by Once Upon a Time alum Jennifer Morrison. But unlike the other new characters in This Is Us, Cassie's connection to the Pearsons is still uncertain.
The This Is Us season 4 premiere kept Cassie isolated for the most part, setting up a surprising ending for the character. Due to her deployment experiences, Cassie suffers from PTSD - similar to Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Nicky (Griffin Dunne) following their Vietnam stints. Struggling to settle back into her family life, she finds herself in a therapy session that abruptly ends when she encountered a violent Nicky. With Kevin expected to iron out the commotion that his estranged uncle created, there's a good chance that his and Cassie's paths will also cross.
Between what we know from last season and the way things panned out in the season 4 premiere, the inevitable encounter of Kevin and Cassie might lead to a relationship. While there's very little we know about Cassie at this point, it seems like everything revealed about her thus far is something also familiar to Kevin. Depending on how Cassie's relationship with Nicky develops, the pair could bond over their shared connection to him. Otherwise, their common issues with alcohol dependency and how this particular problem isolates them from their loved ones could also be enough to bring them together (Kate and Toby did meet while both were dealing with their body weight problems).
The timeline also seems to line up, assuming that Kevin and Cassie become an item and have a kid together. This Is Us is keeping the exact year of the flash-forward under wraps, but based on what we saw, Kevin’s son is about 8-10 years old. That's more or less the time between the present time and that flash-forward. With Kevin (and the rest of The Big Three) fully returning in next week's episode, perhaps the pair's connection will finally be established.
This Is Us continues with "The Pool: Part Two" on Tuesday, October 1 at 9pm ET on NBC.
