This Is Us Season 4 Premiere Has A Twist Similar to The Pilot

This Is Us Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia

There will be a plot twist at the end of This Is Us' season 4 premiere, comparable to the one from the pilot. Debuting in 2016, the drama series introduced fans to the Pearson family with parents Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and their three kids - twins, Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Kate (Chrissy Metz), as well as adopted son Randall (Sterling K. Brown). Tackling their day-to-day issues as they go through their separate and collective lives, it quickly resonated with the general viewing public which explains its massive three-year renewal. This secures the show to run until season 6.

Utilizing a non-linear form of storytelling, This Is Us season 3 ended with a clearer picture of the future - something that it has been teasing throughout its latest run. Lingering questions about some of the family members were answered, while others remain a mystery. But arguably the main takeaway from it is the reveal of a much older Rebecca seemingly in her last days. The show won't return with another flash forward. Instead, it'll go back in time during the early days of Jack and Rebecca's courtship. But that's not the only thing that fans should be excited for, because apparently, another twist is coming, and it'll be as significant as the reveal that everyone from the show's pilot belongs to the same family.

Speaking with The Wrap shortly after news broke out that she's nominated for this year's Emmy's Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Moore teased about what fans can expect in This Is Us season 4 premiere. The actress said that the untitled episode will see the young couple come back home after their impromptu Los Angeles road trip. But before it wraps up, there'll be a massive revelation that she didn't see coming.

“There is a twist at the end of the first episode that even I didn’t see coming and I feel like it’s, not to build it up too much, but it feels analogous to the pilot where it’s like, ‘Whoa, I was not expecting that!’ It’s so beautifully done.”

“There’s a couple different things that happen in the first episode that kind of change the game for the show. We’re still evolving and hopefully still going to blow people’s minds because even I was like, ‘Whoa, that’s really, really incredible.’ And I feel like I’m clued in to most everything that’s happening, but they did it in such a beautiful way and I didn’t expect it.”

The last three seasons of This Is Us was primarily focused on Jack's life, death and his impact on the lives of his kids. Creator Dan Fogelman reveals that this is technically the midpoint of the overall narrative, with the remaining three years shifting the spotlight on the Pearson matriarch. Similar to the first half of the family drama led up to the tragic demise of Jack, chances are it will be the same for his wife evidenced with the upcoming introduction of the character's father. Another significant cast addition is Jennifer Morrison in an undisclosed, yet major role, and it's curious if her character has anything to do with the plot twist that Moore is talking about.

This Is Us' pilot twist totally changed how fans perceived the series until then. Before that, there didn't seem to be any connection among the cast of characters. It turns out, they're all related, and their relationship is at the heart of the show's narrative. The series is not new to plot twists - in fact, it strives in them. But until now, nothing can still rival that first episode reveal. And if fans go by Moore's words, whatever goes down in the season 4 premiere will spell how the rest of the story pans out.
