This Is Us season 4 will continue Jack Pearson's story and Milo Ventimiglia teases what fans can expect for the character this year. The beloved patriarch of the Pearson family may have long been dead, but his presence still largely looms on every member of his brood. Last season, the show finally revealed his time during the Vietnam war, resulting into the revelation that his brother Nicky (Griffin Dunne) is still alive. Nicky met the rest of Jack's family, and thanks to a sneak peek at their future, is confirmed to maintain a relationship with them moving forward, which means fans could learn more about pre-married Jack moving forward.

Shortly after This Is Us premiered in 2016, it was clear that it was going to be a massive hit for the network so it was granted a two-year renewal. The prediction proved right and with its continuous critical and mass popularity, it was no surprise when NBC awarded This Is Us an additional three-year renewal at the end of season 3, locking its return at least until 2021. That offers a lot more time with the Pearson clan, and while he cannot talk about plot specifics, Ventimiglia teases about what fans can expect for his character in season 4.

Speaking with EW in light of his third consecutive Lead Actor Emmy nomination and the upcoming release of his latest project, The Art of Racing in the Rain, Ventimiglia talks about Jack's arc in the latest outing for This Is Us. Season 3 delved deep into his time in Vietnam, and season 4 will continue to do that - only this time, it will be on how he's going to move forward from that traumatic experience.

“He may be past physical war, but it doesn’t mean he’s not in private war — personal war. Those fractures and cracks that you just never recover from. We’re going to see him going through that experience post-war, really trying to reconnect and restart. What is life after Vietnam? And of course, new exciting love with Rebecca. We all know how that goes.”

This Is Us Jack Pearson

Ventimiglia's comments are backed up by the era with which This Is Us season 4 is using. Set images from the season 4 premiere revealed that the show will check up on Jack and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) during their early days of courtship, shortly after returning home following their shotgun Los Angeles road trip. The show has yet to confirm the timeline of the couple's courtship before deciding to get married and have kids, but given the state of their relationship as seen in season 1, it's safe to say that they have been together for quite a while at that point. It's curious what immediate hurdles they're about to face after committing to each other, but it's not hard to imagine that they're going to get pushback from their respective families - which are both dysfunctional in their own ways.

As relatable and well-done Jack's Vietnam arc was last season, the viewers weren't as invested in this storyline compared to his other stories. This was evidenced by the show's ratings on episodes specifically focused on this narrative. This Is Us season 4 will continue to tackle this storyline, but considering that this is set back at home and coupled with his budding romance with Rebecca, there's a lot more for fans to look forward to.
