This Is Us' season 4 finale ends with a mix of highs and lows for the Pearsons. As the family revisit old wounds while they deal with their current  problems, this year's final episode takes viewers further into the future, dropping new hints about what lies ahead for the Pearsons. Considering where the show left things, we can expect more infighting, but also some individual personal growth for the characters.

After spending much of its first three seasons with Jack's (Milo Ventimiglia) story, the focus has now shifted to Rebecca (Mandy Moore). This Is Us continues to inch closer to her inevitable death, first hinted at in season 3 finale's flash-forward. With additional context regarding that peak into the future, fans now have a better sense of what could happen leading up to her deteriorating death. This Is Us season 4 already confirmed that Rebecca's cognitive decline - something that baffled their kids and caused some friction regarding how they're going about with this. Not everything's bad, however, as Kevin (Justin Hartley), Randall (Sterling K. Brown), and Kate (Chrissy Metz) all get some good moments.

NBC wrapped up This Is Us season 4 with the episode titled "Strangers Part 2"  - a reference to this year's premiere titled "Strangers Part 1." Yes, there were some strangers, but the story still mainly revolved around the Pearsons. Here are the biggest takeaways from the finale.

Will Kate & Toby’s Baby Save Their Marriage?

This Is Us Kate Toby and Jack

Following a harrowing pregnancy and less than ideal last few months, Kate and Toby are doing well with Baby Jack celebrating his first birthday. The family visits the NICU where Baby Jack spent his premature days to post a happy family photo in the hopes that their story will inspire and encourage parents who are dealing with the same issues. Between the joyous occasion and the place they're at, Toby tells Kate that he wants Baby Jack to have a sibling. And since it would be too risky to subject Kate to another pregnancy, he suggests that they adopt - hence, they do. As This Is Us shows us the distant future where an older Jack and his wife, Lucy, have their own baby (named Hope), we meet Hailey  - his adopted sister, who runs an art gallery and apparently just had a one night stand with a movie star.

The existence of Hailey in the future proves that Toby and Kate did adopt, and considering that she and Jack seem to be around the same age, fans might see her adoption sooner than later. As of now, the Damons appear to be in a better place especially considering how tense their marriage had been in the last several months as they grappled with raising a visually-impaired baby. However, they're not yet in the clear. Given what's been revealed to audiences in the flash forward, it's not going to be a walk in the park for them moving forward.

Around the time of Rebecca's death, an older, depressed-looking Toby no longer wears his wedding ring. Randall needed to ask him to come out and see the family and her mother-in-law before passing away. Through a series of flash forwards, we've seen most of the Pearsons in the distant future, except for Kate - there wasn't even any mention of her. There's no inkling whatsoever about her whereabouts, leading some to believe that she might no longer be around. In any case, despite their current situation, it doesn't seem like Kate and Toby's marriage will be smooth sailing just because they'll eventually have two kids.

What Kevin & Randall’s Confrontation Means

Kevin and Randall Pearson in This Is Us

As promised, the brewing tension between Randall and Kevin finally blows up in This Is Us' season 4 finale. It stemmed from both's growing concern over Rebecca's degenerative illness. They differ in opinion regarding how to tackle the situation. Randall wants to enroll Rebecca to a clinical trial, but Kevin doesn't, since their mother has explicitly refused the treatment. Unfortunately, instead of abiding by her wishes, Randall went behind his siblings' back and emotionally manipulated Rebecca to abiding. It didn't take long for Kevin to discover what his brother did, causing a commotion at Baby Jack's birthday. Kevin and Randall exchange jabs - making the conflict personal. Their worst blows come towards the end starting with Randall telling Kevin that Jack died ashamed of him, so he can never emulate their dad and he can never at least be him. He also calls him out for having no ability to fully commit to anything. Kevin retorts with a short but painful declaration: the worst day of his life wasn't when Jack died, it was when his parents brought baby Randall home.

The brothers have had their differences in the past, and they used to bicker a lot when they're younger given their very different personalities - something that's more prevalent in the episodes this season. Kevin was the textbook jock, while Randall was the academic whiz. They were able to be civil with each other as they grew older, but continued to have fights. However, everything seemed minuscule to their current conflict as they began airing out years of grievances against each other. Frankly, both have reasons to be mad at each other. After Jack died, Randall was left to take care of Rebecca while Kevin went on with his life by marrying Sophie.

However, it's difficult to blame Kevin for wanting his own family considering that out of the three kids - it always felt like he was the odd one out: Kate had a special relationship with Jack, while Randall has the same thing with Rebecca. That left him alone in the middle and after years of pointing that out, it seemed like he just gave up on the idea that he'll get the same attention that his siblings were getting. Kevin and Randall's current conflict is somehow reminiscent of Jack and Nicky's fight. The question is, will the younger Pearson brothers learn from their father and uncle's history and make up before it's too late. The pair are still on non-speaking terms on their 40th birthday, which will likely be tackled in This Is Us' season 5 premiere later this year.

Madison Is The Mother Of Kevin’s Son (But Where Is She In Flashforwards?)

This Is Us Kevin Madison

Amidst all the chaos brought by Rebecca's condition and his fight with Randall, it seemed like This Is Us writers felt like the issues Kevin needs to address are still not enough. The This Is Us season 4 finale also reveals that Madison is pregnant with his twins after the pair engaged in one night of unplanned sex. Kate's best friend didn't initially want to hassle Kevin with the news, assuming that he wouldn't want it - totally understandable considering that they're not even dating, not to mention Kevin's history with women. She eventually changed her mind thanks to a pep talk from her doctor. Motivated to prove Randall's accusation that he is unable to commit to anything in his life, Kevin surprisingly accepted the curve ball of being an unexpected father thrown at him. "I'm sick of chasing ghosts. I'm all in, Madison. Whatever you need, I'm all in. I want to be a father. I think I'd be great at it," he said.

This answers fans' long-existing question as to who the mysterious mother of Kevin's son (and now, his twin sister) is. In the flash forward, we see Kevin wearing a wedding ring, but with an older Madison nowhere to be found, there's still a chance that they might not even end up with each other. Prior to telling Kevin about their situation, Madison pointed out how his parents have this epic love story - something that he might want for himself. Their relationship isn't exactly romantic and depending on how things shake out for the both of them, they might just share the kids without tying the knot.

If they eventually separate, that's not due to the lack of trying. As teased in the mini-flashforward to the Big Three's 40th birthday, Kevin calls Madison his pregnant fiancée, meaning sometime between now and then, he decides to make it official between them. Number One is prone to making rushed decisions, and most of them didn't pan out great. It's unclear if he made the right call this time, or he's going to ultimately end up marrying someone other than the mother of his kids - after all, the finale episode also hints that viewers have not seen the last of Sophie or Cassidy.

This Is Us Sets Up Rebecca’s Death As Season 5’s Main Storyline

This Is Us Rebecca

Similar to how This Is Us season 3 ended, season 4's finale brings us back to the particular flash forward where the family assembles at Kevin's house to visit a much older Rebecca. Given what's revealed about the Pearson matriarch's condition, it's safe to assume that everyone is asked for their presence to say their farewells to her. Still, there's no Kate to be found, but picking up from Randall greeting their mother in what could very well be her deathbed, Kevin comes into the room and joins the pair. It's unclear if the brothers have made amends at this point, although it's worth noting that the events of the flash-forward might be around five years into the future. And given This Is Us' brand of storytelling, it's difficult to believe that they'll keep the brothers apart for that long (or the next two seasons).

Like Jack's death, Rebecca's demise will more likely be the primary narrative hook of the next two seasons of This Is Us. Aside from learning more about how the family will deal with her condition, it's safe to say that the series will reveal more about her life before she met Jack. We know she's from an affluent family but not much of her childhood has been revealed in the series thus far. The past season has started revealing bits and pieces about her life pr-Big Three with the introduction of her dad who was against her marrying Jack. From there, the story jumps forward, with no information regarding how the couple defied Rebecca's father. And since they weren't present when they got married, it's safe to assume that they pushed forward with it despite not having Rebecca's parents' blessings.

On top of that, fans will also be eager to know how she and Miguel began seeing each other - something that has yet to be fully addressed in This Is Us. Since they're not particularly romantic with each other, it's curious if they married each other because they're in love or purely for companionship purposes. This could eventually lead to an explanation on why he's also nowhere to be found in these flash forward scenes. It's also worth noting that Nicky will somehow be more involved with family affairs since he was even beside Rebecca's deathbed. This is a detail that has been easily overlooked with season 4 not revealing any thing significant that would explain it.
