This Is Us season 4 will feature a bigger world for the Pearsons, actor Milo Ventimiglia reveals. Next month, NBC's hit family drama will be back for its anticipated fourth season, and given how things ended with the season 3 finale, there's not much known about the narrative for this year. But Ventimiglia, who plays the show's lead Jack Pearson, teases some sort of expansion.
Premiering in 2016, This Is Us focuses on the Pearson family. The show utilizes a non-linear type of storytelling, allowing fans to jump through eras. Season 3 ended with the first significant flash forward scene teasing potentially the last few days of the clan's matriarch, Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore). But it may take a little while before the show visits the future again as its season 4 premiere will kick off with a trip to the 1970s, set during Jack and Rebecca's early days of courtship. However, that doesn't mean there will be less pivotal details to look forward to as Ventimiglia sheds a bit of light about the much-awaited plot twist that was previously teased by Moore.
In a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live to promote his latest project, The Art of Racing in the Rain, Ventimiglia was asked about that mysterious plot twist expected in This Is Us season 4's debut. Since the show lives by its surprising narrative, Ventimiglia obviously can't share anything specific, but he does tease how the series will grow:
"Well, because you’re all going to be watching it, first and foremost, I can’t give away those f--king answers. I really can’t. Like…it’s just…the world expands. The world expands."
Given the various time periods tackled in the series, it's difficult to gauge when this world expansion takes place. There are a couple of new characters coming to the show in season 4, like Jennifer Morrison's still-undisclosed role. No detail has been revealed about the part that she will play, but she's tipped to be a pivotal player in This Is Us' upcoming outing. In addition to that, creator Dan Fogelman revealed that fans will soon meet Rebecca's father, albeit no actor has yet to be confirmed for the role. Nevertheless, his debut will more likely have something to do with his daughter's budding romance with Jack.
Aside from the upcoming characters, the season 3 finale may have also given the public clues about this expanding world. Nicky's (Griffin Dunne) continued association with his brother's family, for instance, may reveal more about his early days back in the Unites States after his Vietnam stint. Perhaps he had his own family, and Jack somehow knew about it and they're tipped to be introduced in This Is Us season 4. But considering that the said twist is likened to the one in the show's premiere, chances are that it has a direct impact on the core Pearson family, and it's something that more likely took place while Jack was still alive.
