NBC's This Is Us casts Jennifer Morrison for a recurring season 4 role. The family drama debuted in 2016 and quickly became a hit with viewers that in the middle of its debut season, it was picked up for two more seasons. Following season 3's wrap up this spring, the network awarded it with another massive three-year order, securing its run until the 2021-2022 TV season.
The show focuses on the Pearson family - parents, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore), and their three kids: Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown), as they go through the motions of life. Using a non-linear way of storytelling, This Is Us jumps from one era to another, usually with narrative parallels. Season 3 was a lesser focused outing compared to its predecessors, but it remains a good show. It ended with a pivotal flash forward scene that offers fans a glimpse of what the Pearson family will be doing in the not too distant future. That includes the confirmation that Randall and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) ultimately stay together despite going through a rocky patch; Kevin having a son following his break-up with Zoe (Melanie Liburd); baby Jack growing up; and Rebecca on what seemingly is her deathbed. Not much is known regarding what lies ahed in season 4, but latest casting news reveal a new addition to the show's cast.
TVLine reports that Morrison, who played fan-favorite Emma Swan on Once Upon A Time is joining This Is Us for their upcoming outing. Details about her character is still being kept under wraps, but her character is expected to play a pivotal role in how the story shakes out in season 4. The actress celebrated the announcement via a post on her official Twitter account acknowledging her nearing debut in one of the most popular shows right now. Her fans, meanwhile, sent her words of encouragement for her nabbing the gig. See the tweet below:
Season 4 won't return to the future for a while as Metz recently revealed that This Is Us will pick up roughly five months after the events of the present timeline. Considering this, it's safe to say that the Morrison's character will factor in the current narratives of the Pearsons. And frankly, considering that the show has a lot of moving pieces, not to mention its consistent time warping, it's quite difficult to gauge how she will be incorporated in the narrative. There are a couple of things, however, that are confirmed with regard to the future of the drama including the fact that this is its overarching arc's midpoint, meaning the next three seasons are supposedly going to be its last. And in a parallel to its first three years which focused on Jack's life, the remaining years will shift attention to Rebecca leading up to her final days as seen in the flash forward.
Between what was revealed in the season 3 finale and what's known in terms of narrative for This Is Us, there are a few possibilities when it comes to Morrison's character. She could be Kevin's next love interest, and potentially even the mother of his son. This is one of the biggest mystery teased in the flash forward scene since Number 1 isn't romantically involved in the present timeline. She may also have something to do with Nick's (Griffin Dune) past since it's more likely that he will remain linked to his brother's family. And finally, since Rebecca's story will be a focal point, perhaps she's someone from her past.
This Is Us season 4 will premiere on September 24 on NBC.
