This Is Us' upcoming season 3 finale will put focus on the mysterious flash forward scene. First teased last season and expanded this year, the flash forward revealed an older Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) getting ready to meet "her," who's confirmed to be Mandy Moore's Rebecca. Since this revelation, fans have been trying to come up with their theories about what the Pearson matriarch is up to - most of them speculating of a tragic future for her. And with just two episodes left before the current outing of the hit NBC series wraps up, viewers are expecting for a major reveal in the series finale.
After a gruelling couple of days in the hospital following Kate (Chrissy Metz) going to early labor, the Pearsons went back to their respective lives last week. All siblings had something going for them - Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan) got to hold baby Jack for the first time; Kevin (Justin Hartley) had an epiphany about his relationship with Zoe (Melanie Liburd); while Randall and Beth ended the episode with a budding shouting match following months of accumulated frustration with each other.
In light of the nearing season 3 finale, the This Is Us cast and crew appeared at Dolby Theatre in Hollywood for the closing night at Paleyfest (via Variety) over the the weekend where creator Dan Fogelman dropped some hints as to what to expect in final episode of the year. And unsurprisingly, the flashforward scene that has been puzzling fans will “be a big part of” the outing. Aside from that, he added that Randall and Beth's troubled marriage will be a main plot point too, saying "there will be an answer there in terms of the long-term health of their relationship.”
With regard to what lies ahead past season 3, Fogelman teased the introduction of Rebecca's father, who has yet to be introduced in the show. He also hinted at more new characters to come as the show grows in scale. “Our world’s going to expand a little bit in a really interesting way. I think where we’re starting the season is as ambitious as we’ve been, kind of like storytelling way. We have a plan; we’re at the midpoint. We know where we’re going, we know what we’re doing. I’m more excited about the back half of the plan than the front half,” he said.
This means that This Is Us season 4 will spend a significant amount of time in the past as a young Rebecca takes the center stage, and chances are that whatever is revealed in the season finale will round back to her yesteryears. It's interesting that throughout the show's duration, viewers have only seen Rebecca's snooty (and racist) mother. Season 3 did a deep dive with Jack's (Milo Ventimiglia) past with his dysfunctional family and time in Vietnam with Nicky (Michael Angarano/Griffin Dune), and it will be great to see how his and his wife's upbringing differed.
As for Randall and Beth, it's anyone's guess at this point what could happen to them. This week's This Is Us episode will focus on their backstory which could play a pivotal role on their season 3 finale fate. The flashforward hinted that they may not be in the best terms in the future, but that scene could also be misleading. Season 1 had Rebecca and Jack split up, but they eventually got back together. Perhaps the same can happen with the Pearson-Clarke couple.
