Milo Ventimiglia reveals that the This Is Us finale devastated him. Debuting in 2016, the NBC family drama follows the life of Jack (Ventimiglia) and Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore) and their three kids — twins, Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Kate (Chrissy Metz), as well as their adopted son, Randall (Sterling K. Brown). Its storytelling jumps through multiple eras, revealing various perspectives. That said, the primary narrative takes place in the present time, with all kids now adults with their respective families.

When This Is Us premiered, it was an instant hit, scoring multiple season renewals early on. But, instead of milking its story simply because of its popularity, NBC decided to wrap it up properly (how creator Dan Fogelman intended to) after the upcoming season 6. Like many TV shows, the coronavirus pandemic forced it to change certain elements in season 5. That being said, the overall trajectory for the Pearsons remained. It effectively set up the stage for the show's final hurrah. Given its penchant for unexpected twists and turns, it's difficult to predict what exactly will happen in the final season of This Is Us, but Ventimiglia has confirmed that it will be very emotional.

Speaking with US Magazine, the actor briefly talked about This Is Us season 6. He shared that the team is happy that they will be able to end the series properly, instead of being unceremoniously canceled. He then recalled being on set two weeks ago with Fogelman when he and Moore learned how the show wraps up. Understandably, he couldn't discuss specific story details, but he promised that it would be "incredibly satisfying," but "is probably gonna wreck people in the most heartfelt way." “I think it’s wonderful. I think it’s incredibly satisfying. I think it’s beautiful. I was just on set with Dan about two weeks ago and he was talking about some things that I didn’t know about the end. I was there with Mandy [Moore]. We just kind of looked at each other, like, one, excited to get into it, and two, incredibly devastated as human beings because this is probably gonna wreck people in the most heartfelt way. It’s beautiful. I’m so excited.”

The Pearson family enjoys each other's company in This Is Us

This Is Us season 5 ended on a quieter note — at least compared to its predecessors. That doesn't mean, however, that it didn't feature a major bombshell. After Kevin and Madison (Caitlin Thompson) canceled their wedding, the series revealed another look into the future, wherein the Pearsons are once again getting ready for a wedding. But, surprisingly, the celebration is for Kate, who is set to marry a second time. It's uncertain why her and Toby's (Chris Sullivan) marriage failed, but she appears to be very happy.

Aside from the future of the Big Three, many are also looking forward to learning what lies ahead for Rebecca. The Pearson matriarch has been diagnosed with a degenerative disease, and it's safe to say that it will be the focus of This Is Us season 6, leading to what could be her death. Between this and the break-up of Toby and Kate, it's clear that the show's final episodes will be an emotional roller coaster. However, fans should also expect more surprises that could make the show's narrative a highly compelling one, too.
